[로스앤젤레스=AP/KNS] 미국 연방수사대는 7일 한 라틴계 갱단이 1990년대 초 부터 이 지역에서 영향력을 강화하고 멕시코의 마피아 갱단에 충성하기 위해 위협, 협박, 폭력행사에 의해 흑인 주민들을 남부 캘리포니아 시에서 축출하려는 음모를 꾸민 것으로 밝혔다.

당국은 아침 일찍 출동하여 50여명의 갱단을 체포한 것으로 알려졌다. 연방수사관들은 이 갱단이 400여명의 조직원으로 구성되어 있으며 로스앤젤레스 인근의 인구 45,000명의 소도시에서 마약밀매, 인종차별적 범죄 등 여러 범죄를 저질러 아주사시를 절뚝거리게 만들었다.

앙드레 비로떼 미국 연방 검사는 “이 연방수사 사건을 계기로 인종차별행위의 근절과 수년에 걸친 범죄행위로 인하여 희생당한 사람들의 명예가 회복되길 바란다” 고 말했다.

이번의 강력단속은 최근 로스앤젤레스 지역의 흑인을 상대로 한 라틴계 갱단을 와해시키려는 사법당국의 노력의 일환이다.

아주사 시에서 흑인을 몰아내고 이주해 오는 것을 막기 위해 이들을 괴롭히거나 폭력을 행사하는 인권위반 혐의로 6명을 기소한 것으로 이 사건의 연루자는 최소 10년 징역형에 처해지게 된다.

검찰당국은 이 갱단은 마약 밀매자들이 아주사시에서 영업을 하는 대가로 돈을 갈취했다고 발표했다. 갱단은 마약밀매 사업을 독점하기 위해 계획을 짜고 무기를 구입하고 다루기 힘든 마약판매상을 납치하려했다고 밝혔다.

마약판매 대금은 이 갱단을 지휘하는 멕시코 마피아단으로 흘러 들어간 것으로 알려졌다.

Feds accuse gang of targeting blacks in US city

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Latino gang conspired to rid a Southern California city of its black residents through intimidation, threats and violence dating back to the early 1990s to exert its influence and show its loyalty to the Mexican Mafia prison gang, according to a federal racketeering indictment unsealed Tuesday.

More than 50 people were charged as authorities made early morning raids targeting the Varrio Azusa 13 gang. Federal prosecutors said the gang, which has about 400 members or associates, engaged in a host of crimes ranging from drug trafficking to hate crimes that have hobbled Azusa, a city of about 45,000 residents near Los Angeles.

"We hope that this federal case will signal the end of this racist behavior and will help vindicate all of the victims who have suffered over the years," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said.

The crackdown is the latest effort by law enforcement to cripple Latino gangs that have targeted blacks in the Los Angeles area.

In Azusa, six people have been charged with civil rights violations for allegedly harassing, and in some cases attacking, African Americans to cripple or to prevent them from relocating there. Most of the defendants named in the indictment face a minimum 10-year prison sentence.

Authorities also said the gang extorted payments from drug dealers to let them keep working in Azusa. The gang also drew up a business plan to monopolize the drug trade in the city, which included stockpiling an arsenal of weapons and plotting to kidnap relatives of wayward dealers, the 24-count indictment said.

Drug proceeds were then funneled to members of the Mexican Mafia who wielded control over the gang. The "13" in the gang's name — much like others in Southern California — stands for the letter 'M' and shows the affiliation with the notorious prison gang.
