1967년 개정된 주한 미군지위협정은 한국 내에서 미군이 작전을 수행하기 위한 법적 근거를 제공하는 협정으로 미군에게 부여한 법적 보호조항이 한국인들에게 불공정한 것으로 받아들여 질 때 산발적으로 한국민들로 부터 공격의 대상이 되어왔다.
서울에서 300km 떨어진 칠곡에 있는 미군기지에 30년 전 고엽제로 알려진 에이전트 오렌지를 미군이 비밀리에 매몰했다는 사실이 최근 알려지면서 주한 미군지위협정의 정당성에 다시 논란이 되고 있다.
현재 매몰현장에서 조사가 진행 중인데 한국정부는 결과가 나오기를 기다리고 있다.
2001년에 최종 개정된 주한 미군지위협정은 미군의 범죄에 대한 한국의 사법권 행사를 늘렸으며 한국의 환경관련 법규를 준수하도록 규정하고 있다.

S. Korea rules out immediate revision of SOFA
SEOUL, May 24 (Xinhua) -- South Korea is not currently considering revising the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with the United States despite rekindled domestic opposition to the accord, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.
The agreement, signed in 1967 to provide legal basis for U.S. forces to operate here, has met with sporadic public decry when legal protection it offers for U.S. soldiers led South Koreans to question its fairness.
Recent allegations that the U.S. forces secretly dumped over 30 years ago the toxic defoliant Agent Orange at one of their bases in Chilgok, some 300 km southeast of Seoul, stirred up new debates about the validity of the agreement.
An on-site probe into the allegations is currently underway, and the South Korean government is awaiting findings.
The agreement was last revised in 2001, which allowed more crimes by U.S. military personnel to be tried at local courts and ensured more respect for South Korean environmental laws.
