[런던(영국)=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 박지성이 맨체스터유나이티드를 떠나 퀸즈파크레인저스(이하 QPR)와 2년계약을 맺었다.
올해 32살의 박지성은 맨체스터유나이티드(이하 맨유)에서 2008년 챔피언스리그 우승과 4번의 프리미어리그 우승을 차지했지만 QPR의 토니 페르난데스 회장과 마크 휴즈 감독의 "절대 거절할 수 없는 계획"에 따라 QPR로 이적을 하게 되었다고 밝혔다.
박지성은 QPR의 휴즈 감독, 페르난데즈 회장이 함께 자리한 발표회장에서 "QPR을 더 나은 팀으로 발전시키길 바라고 더 높은 수준으로 끌어올리기 위해 노력하겠다. 다른 여러 이적 제의가 있었지만 돈은 중요하지 않았다" 라고 말했다.
지난 2월 QPR에 부임하여 시즌 마지막 경기에서 QPR의 1부리그 잔류에 성공했던 휴즈감독은 박지성의 이적이 팀의 발전의 첫 계기가 될 것이라는 기대감을 비추며 "이번 계약은 우리 클럽이 나아가야할 방향을 제시해주는 계약이다. 이 계약은 정말 QPR에게 큰 성공이다. 박지성은 기술과 체력에 있어 정말 뛰어난 선수다. 그와 함께 뛰게될 날이 너무 기다려진다"라고 말했다.
박지성의 이적은 이번 여름이적시장이 열린 후 맨유에서 브라질 출신 수비수 파비우 다 실바의 한시즌 임대 계약이후 두번째 계약이며, QPR의 여섯번째 계약이다. QPR은 최근 영국 골키퍼 로버트 그린과 뉴질랜드 수비수 라이언 넬슨도 영입한 바 있다.
이 자리에서 페르난데즈회장은 런던에 45,000석 규모의 새로운 구장 설립계획을 발표하며 "우리는 정말 원만하게 이 계획을 진행하고 있다. 몇 달이 지나면 우리는 구체적인 것을 발표할 수 있을 것이다. 우리가 여기 계획한 대로 해낸다면 정말 놀라운 일이 될 것이다"라고 말했다.
LONDON (AP) — Queens Park Rangers signed South Korea midfielder Park Ji-sung from Manchester United on a two-year contract on Monday.
The 31-year-old Park, who won the 2008 Champions League and four Premier League titles with United, said he "couldn't resist the plans" put forward to him by QPR manager Mark Hughes and club chairman Tony Fernandes.
Park was speaking at a news conference alongside Hughes and Fernandes to announce his arrival.
"I know QPR want to improve and I want to help them reach the next level," said Park. "There were other offers but money is not important."
Hughes took charge of QPR in January and oversaw the side maintaining its Premier League status on the final day of last season. He believes Park's arrival is a signal of intent from the London side to progress.
"It is a significant signing for the club and shows where we want to go," Hughes said. "This is a real coup for QPR. Ji is a player of great energy and technical ability. I can't wait to get working with him."
Park becomes Rangers' sixth offseason signing and the second from Manchester United, following the arrival of Brazilian defender Fabio Da Silva on a season-long loan deal. England goalkeeper Robert Green and New Zealand defender Ryan Nelsen are among the other new signings.
Fernandes also spoke of initial plans to build a new 45,000-seat stadium in London.
"We are making good progress. In the next few months we should be able to announce something," Fernandes said. "If we can deliver what we've put on paper it will be very exciting."
