[윔블던(영국)=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 윔블던에서는 세레나 윌리엄스의 아웃을 세는 것보다 서비스에이스를 세는 것이 빨랐다.
한달 전 첫 그랜드슬램 토너먼트 1라운드 탈락의 아픔을 맛봤던 세레나는 지난 5일 토너먼트 신기록인 24개의 서비스 에이스를 기록하며 생애 일곱번째로 윔블던 결승에 진출했다.
세레나는 벨라루즈의 빅토리아 아자렌카를 맞아 6-3, 7-6으로 승리한 후 "솔직히 말하자면 오늘 내 서브가 대단하다고 생각하지 않았다. 정말 그랬다"라고 말했다.
세레나는 13개의 그랜드슬램 타이틀을 획득했지만 2년 전의 윔블던 대회가 마지막 우승이었다. 그 우승직후 세레나는 레스토랑에서 유리를 밟아 부상을 입었고, 폐에 종양이 발견되는 등 건강문제가 줄을 이었다.
세레나는 경기 후 "난 코트에서 매순간 너무 감사한 마음입니다. 특히 윔블던 같은 큰 대회 토너먼트에서 경기한다는 자체에 자부심을 가지고 있습니다" 라고 밝혔다.
7월7일 토요일에 있을 결승전에서 세레나 윌리엄스는 1939년 이후 윔블던 결승에 진출한 최초의 폴란드 선수인 아그니에스카 라드완스카와 격돌한다. 3번시드의 라드완스카는 앙겔리케 케르버를 6-3, 6-4로 이기고 윔블던 결승에 진출했다.
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Instead of counting Serena Williams out at Wimbledon, it was much easier to count her aces.
About a month after losing in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career, Williams hit a tournament-record 24 aces Thursday to reach her seventh Wimbledon final.
"I honestly didn't feel great on my serve today. I really didn't," Williams said after beating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-3, 7-6 (6) on Centre Court. "I thought my serve was off, and apparently clearly it wasn't, so maybe I should be off a little more."
Williams has won 13 Grand Slam titles, but her last one came at the All England Club two years ago. Shortly after that victory, Williams cut her feet on glass at a restaurant, leading to a series of health problems, including being hospitalized for clots in her lungs.
"I have so much appreciation for every moment on the court," Williams said. "I really take pride in playing, especially playing such big, amazing tournaments like this."
In Saturday's final, Williams will face Agnieszka Radwanska. The third-seeded Radwanska became the first Polish player to reach a Grand Slam final since 1939 by beating Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
