[상파울루(브라질)=AP/KNS뉴스통신] AC밀란의 수비수 티아고 실바와 FC포르투의 스트라이커 헐크가 브라질의 첫 올림픽 금메달을 위한 올림픽대표팀 명단에 이름을 올렸다.
지난 5일 마노 메네제스 브라질 감독은 놀라운 활동량을 보여주는 레알 마드리드 수비수 마르첼로를 포함해 이 세 명을 18인의 최종명단에서 와일드카드로 확정했다.
오랜 기간 세계축구를 주도해온 브라질은 주요 대회 중 유일하게 올림픽에서 우승하지 못했다. 그러나 브라질은 여전히 런던행을 확정지은 팀 중 가장 훌륭한 선수구성을 가진 팀중 하나이며 강력한 우승후보다.
이 선수들의 상당수는 2014년 브라질 월드컵에 출전하게 된다. 네이마르(산투스)를 비롯해 파울로 엔리케 간수(산투스), 레안드루 다미아우(인터나시오날), 루카스(상파울루), 오스카(인터나시오날), 알렉산드르 파투(AC밀란) 등은 이미 예고된 스타다.
한편 이번 와일드카드 선발에서 다니 알베스(바르셀로나), 다비드 루이스(첼시), 필리페 쿠티뉴(에스파뇰) 등은 제외되었으며, 과거 최고의 스타였던 카카(레알 마드리드), 호나우지뉴(아틀레티쿠 미네이루), 호비뉴(AC밀란) 등도 명단에서 탈락했다.
메네제스 감독은 브라질대표팀의 최근 4번의 친선시합에서 좋은 활약을 보인 헐크를 와일드카드로 선택했다고 밝혔다.
그는 "헐크는 팀에 강력한 힘을 보탤 것이다. 헐크의 경험은 큰 시합에서 더욱 중요하며 확실한 결정력을 가졌다"고 말하며, 세 명의 와일드카드 중에 스트라이커를 포함시키는 것이 중요했다고 밝혔다. 티아고 실바는 그동안 몇 번 명단에 이름을 올려왔고 마르첼로는 네 번의 친선시합 이후에 명단에 확정되었다.
브라질은 1984년 LA올림픽과 1988년 서울올림픽에서 은메달을 획득했으며, 1996년 아틀란타올림픽에서 동메달에 그쳤으며, 또한 지난 2008년 베이징올림픽에서도 리오넬 메시가 이끄는 아르헨티나가 금메달을 차지한 가운데 브라질은 동메달에 머물렀다.
브라질은 7월 16일 런던 행에 오르며, 영국올림픽단일팀과의 친선경기를 갖는다. 그룹 C조에 속한 브라질은 7월 26일 웨일즈의 카디프에 있는 밀레니움스타디움에서 이집트와 예선 첫 경기를 가지며 7월 29일에는 맨체스터의 올드트레포드에서 벨라루즈와 두 번째 경기를 8월1일 뉴캐슬에서는 뉴질랜드와 예선 마지막 경기를 갖는다.
SAO PAULO (AP) — AC Milan defender Thiago Silva and FC Porto striker Hulk were named in the squad that will try to earn Brazil its first Olympic gold medal in football.
Real Madrid defender Marcelo was the other overage player included in the 18-man squad selected on Thursday by coach Mano Menezes for the London Games. The Olympic tournament is the only significant football title that Brazil has never won.
Brazil is one of the few teams taking its best players to London and it will be one of the gold-medal favorites. Many of the players are expected to be in the 2014 World Cup team, too.
As expected, Brazil has several promising young stars such as Neymar, Paulo Henrique Ganso, Leandro Damiao, Lucas, Oscar and Alexandre Pato.Among those who didn't make the cut included Chelsea defender David Luiz, Barcelona right back Daniel Alves, and Espanyol forward Philippe Coutinho.Past stars such as Kaka, Robinho and Ronaldinho had already been ruled out.
Menezes said Hulk was picked as one of the three over-23 players thanks in part because of his good performances in the four friendlies Brazil played recently. "He brings a lot of strength to the team," Menezes said. "His experience will be important in big matches. He has a great ability to be decisive." The coach said he felt it was important to include a striker among the three overage players.
Thiago Silva had been set to make the squad for some time, and Marcelo secured his spot after also playing well in the friendlies — victories against Denmark and the United States and losses to Mexico and Argentina.
Brazil won the Olympic silver in 1984 and 1988, and the bronze in 1996 and 2008, when Argentina took gold with a team led by Lionel Messi.
Brazil will travel to Europe on July 16 and will play a friendly against Olympic host Britain just days before its July 26 debut against Egypt at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Brazil will then play Belarus at Old Trafford on July 29 and New Zealand in Newcastle on Aug. 1 to close out its play in Group C.
