[도네츠크(우크라이나)=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 우크라이나 주장 안드레이 셰브첸코가 왼쪽 무릎부상으로 오는 목요일 예정된 D조 조별 잉글랜드전에 불참할 것이라는 소식이다.
그의 언론 담당관인 올레크산드르는 “지난 프랑스와 스웨덴 경기에서 상대팀의 견제를 받은 그는 무릎이 부풀어올라 통증을 느끼고 있다”고 상태를 전했다.
이어 그는 “우리는 그가 다음 경기에서 뛸 수 있을지 확신할 수는 없다”고 아쉬움을 드러냈지만 셰브첸코의 전담 의료진인 레오니드 미로노브는 지역 TV와의 인터뷰에서 "상태가 생각보다 나쁘지 않다"고 희망섞인 소식을 이었다.
다만 미로노브는 셰브첸코가 정상적인 훈련을 하기 위해서는 2~3일 가량은 휴식이 필요하다는 입장을 고수했다.
D조에 속한 우크라이나는 지난 덴마크와의 개막전에서 셰브첸코의 2골로 2-1로 역전승을 거두며 1승을 챙긴 후 프랑스와의 경기에서 2-0으로 패했다.
올 유로 2012 대회 이후 국제대회에서 은퇴할 것으로 알려진 35살의 노장 스트라이커를 본선 마지막 경기에서 볼 수 있을 지 팬들의 시선이 셰브첸코의 출전 여부에 집중되고 있다.
DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko has injured his left knee and is a doubt for his team's must-win match against England on Tuesday in Group D of the European Championship.
Team spokesman Oleksandr Glyvynskiy said the striker's knee was swollen after picking up knocks in the previous group games against Sweden and France.
"We hope he can play but for the moment he is doubtful for the match," Glyvynskiy said.
Team doctor Leonid Mironov told a local TV station that the medical staff was working withShevchenko in order to get him fit in time for Tuesday.
According to Mironov, such an injury would normally require two or three days of rest.
Shevchenko, who scored both his team's goals in an opening 2-1 win over Sweden, missed training on Sunday because of the injury.
Ukraine needs to beat England to stand a chance of advancing to the quarterfinals and missingShevchenko would be a massive blow.
A 2-0 defeat to France on Friday could have been Shevchenko's last match for Ukraine. Long before the tournament, the 35-year striker announced his international retirement after Euro 2012.
