[양곤=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 미얀마의 카렌반군이 아웅산 수치 야당 지도자와 미얀마 대통령과 연달아 회담을 열면서 미얀마 정부로 부터 자결권 획득하기 위한 노력에 박차를 가하고 있다.
미얀마에서 민족 자결권을 요구하는 반정부군인 카렌 민족 동맹의 지도자들이 지난 6일 미얀마 군부의 지지를 받는 민간인 대통령과의 회담에서 지난 1월에 맺은 휴전협정을 재확인한 이후 8일 아웅산 수치 여사와의 만남으로 이어진 것이다.
카렌 민족 동맹의 지도자들이 떼인 세인 대통령과 아웅산 수치여사와의 회담은 지금까지 전례가 없던 일로 카렌반군은 1948년 영국에서 독립한 이후 미얀마 정부로부터 자결권을 획득하기 위해 무장투쟁을 벌려왔다.
대부분의 미얀마 정치 단체들은 미얀마의 평화를 유지하기 위해 카렌 민족 동맹과의 정치적 해결을 지지하고 있다.

Myanmar's Karen rebels meet with Aung San Suu Kyi
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Leaders of Myanmar's most enduring ethnic rebel group met with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi a day after meeting with the country's president, the latest step in the group's effort to open a dialogue to achieve greater autonomy.
The 2 1/2-hour meeting Sunday of leaders of the Karen National Union with Suu Kyi also followed an agreement the group reached Friday with the military-backed but elected government to firm up a cease-fire they made in January.
The meetings with President Thein Sein and Suu Kyi were virtually unprecedented for the KNU, which has mostly been engaged in an armed struggle for greater autonomy from Myanmar's government since the country obtained independence from Britain in 1948.
Most of the groups, however, insist that a political settlement giving them more autonomy is necessary to ensure enduring peace.
