[오타와=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 리언 파네타 미 국방장관이 27일 아프간전쟁은 여론이 주도할 수 없다고 말하고 미국은 아프간 전에 대한 미국인들의 신뢰감 급락에도 불구하고 10년에 걸친 전쟁에서 기존 정책을 그대로 계속할 뜻을 강조했다.

파네타 장관은 미국인들이 전쟁에 실증을 느끼고 있는데는 의심의 여지가 없으나 미국인들은 9/11 사태와 알-카에다가 또 다른 공격을 하기 위해 아프간에 피난처로 삼는 것을 방지하기 위한 것으로 이해하고 있다고 말했다.

파네타 국방장관은 아프간 전에서 다수의 사망자가 나왔는데 “우리는 그들이 헛되이 죽어간 것이 아니라는 것을 확실히 해야 한다”고 말하고 다수의 군 지휘관들은 2011년에 아프간 전쟁에서 전기를 맞아 전투가 점차 줄어들고 있다는 것을 확신하고 있다고 덧붙였다.

Panetta: War strategy can't be guided by polls

OTTAWA, Canada (AP) — The war in Afghanistan can't be determined by polls, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Tuesday, asserting that the U.S. must continue with its strategy in the decade-old conflict despite plummeting American confidence in the war.

Panetta said that there is no question that the American people are tired of war. But, he said, the public understands the U.S. is engaged in Afghanistan because of the attacks on Sept. 11, and to prevent al-Qaida 　from again finding safe havens there to launch attacks.

Panetta said that a lot of lives have been lost in the war, and "our commitment must be to insure that those lives have not been lost in vain." He said that he and his military commanders are convinced that 2011 was a turning point in the war and that the levels of violence are declining.
