[워싱턴=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 벤 버냉키 미국 연방준비제도이사회 (이하 연준) 의장은 지난 3개월 동안 고용의 증가에도 불구하고 미국의 고용시장이 아직도 약세를 유지하고 있기 때문에 기존의 저금리 정책이 경제 성장에 도움이 될 것이라고 말했다.

버냉키 의장은 고용이 증가하려면 왕성한 소비 증가와 기업 투자가 요구된다고 말하면서 연준은 최근 미국 경제가 살아나는 조짐을 보이고 있지만 저금리 정책은 계속해서 유지할 뜻을 나타낸 것으로 받아드려진다.

지난 해 12월 이후 고용이 증가하자 연준이 금리를 처음 계획했던 것보다 일찍 인상할 것이라는 생각을 갖게 했으나 26일 버냉키 의장의 언급으로 저금리정책은 2014년 말까지 가져갈 것이 확실해져 보인다.

버냉키 의장은 만약 경제가 다시 약세로 돌아선다면 소비촉진과 투자활성화를 위해 연준은 장기 금리를 더 인하할 정책을 채택할 것으로 판단하고 있다.

Bernanke says US job market weak despite gains

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chairman Ben Bernanke says the U.S. job market remains weak despite three months of strong hiring and that the Federal Reserve's existing policies will help boost growth.

Bernanke says further job gains will likely require more robust consumer and business demand.

Bernanke's comments were a strong indication that the central bank is prepared to keep its low interest rate policies in place for some time to come, despite the recent signs of economic growth.

The gains in hiring since December had led some economists to predict that the Fed might consider raising rates earlier than it planned. But many took Bernanke's cautious tone Monday as a firmer commitment to the late-2014 timetable.

And some viewed the speech as a signal that the Fed might take further steps, if the economy f　alters, to try to further drive down long-term borrowing rates. The goal would be to encourage more spending by consumers and businesses.
