[베이루트=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 버락 오바마 대통령이 최근 백악관 기자회견에서 “결국 이 독재자는 실각할 것이라고” 말한 예상은 아마 시기상조로 보인다.

그러나 시리아 사태의 가능한 시나리오는 정부가 영토의 대부분을 통치하면서 반정부군이 게릴라전을 펼치는 상황으로 발전하는 양상으로 발전하고 있다.

지난 19일 시리아 반군이 치안이 강화된 다마스쿠스 시내에서 정부군과 총격전을 벌리면서 반군이 점차 반란 작전으로 방향을 바꾸고 있는 것으로 보인다.

또한 반군은 정부군 초소를 기습하고 보안군에 대해 공격하는 한편 길거리 폭탄을 터트리고 있다.

21일에는 알-카에다가 지원하는 시리아 지하드 그룹이 다마스쿠스에서 20여명이 사망한 길거리 폭탄 테러가 자신들의 소행이라고 주장하고 나섰다.

시리아의 종족 분쟁으로 내전으로 확산되면 가장 끔찍한 시나리오이다.

시리아 시위가 계속되면서 이슬람 극단주의자들이 분쟁에 끼어드는 위협이 대두되고 있다.

Syria's Assad in firm control after a bloody year

BEIRUT (AP) — As the U.S. president summed up during a recent White House press conference: "Ultimately, this dictator will fall." That prediction may be premature.

The volatile sectarian divide makes civil war one of the most dire scenarios.

But another likely scenario is a grinding insurgent conflict in which the regime tries to impose control over as much territory as it can while rebels try to weaken it with a guerrilla war.

On Monday, Syrian rebels battled regime forces in a heavily protected, upscale area of Damascus in a sign that the opposition is increasingly turning to insurgent tactics.

There also have been ambushes on government checkpoints, attacks on security forces and roadside bombs.

Now there is the new threat that as the conflict drags on, Islamic extremists will enter the fray.

On Wednesday, an al-Qaida-inspired 　group called the Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant claimed responsibility for two recent suicide bombings in Damascus, which killed more than two dozen people.
