[앵커리지=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 샌프란시스코에서 상하이까지 여행하는데 걸리는 13시간은 결코 짧은 통근거리는 아니지만 예상하지 못하게 유나이티드의 승객 262명이 이틀 동안이나 앵커리지에서 발이 묶인 항공기 지연사건이 발생했다.
유나이티드 항공사 대변인은 18일 (현지시간) UA 857기가 샌프란시스코를 오후 2시에 이륙한지 3시간이 지나자 몇 개의 화장실이 작동하지 않아 가장 가까운 비행장인 앵커리지공항으로 항로를 변경했다.
앵커리지 일간지는 승객들이 오후 8시까지 좌석에서 떠나지 못하고 비행기에서 내릴 때까지 기다려야 했다고 말한 것으로 보도했다.
항공사는 호텔과 음식권을 제공했으나 수 명의 직원이 이 일을 처리하는데 몇 시간이나 걸렸다고 신문이 보도했다.
유나이티드는 19일 (현지시간) 대체 항공기를 보내 승객이 비행기에 올랐으나 이번에도 두 번째 항공기가 고장을 일으켜 결국 20일에야 세 번째 항공기인 보잉 777기로 앵커리지 공항을 이륙한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

SF-to-Shanghai passengers stuck 2 days in Alaska
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A 13-hour flight from San Francisco to Shanghai is no commuter hop, but the 262 passengers on a United Airlines flight were ready for that. Instead, they were stranded in Anchorage, Alaska, for two days.
Flight 857 diverted to the nearest airport — Anchorage — when several lavatories were found to be inoperable about three hours after the flight's 2 p.m. Sunday departure from San Francisco, United spokesman Charles Hobart said.
Passengers told the Anchorage Daily News they waited in their seats until 8 p.m. before they were allowed to deplane.
The airline handed out hotel and meal vouchers, but with only a handful of employees to handle the task, it took several hours, the newspaper reported.
United brought in another plane Monday, and passengers boarded, but that plane also had problems. Passengers finally took off Tuesday afternoon on a third Boeing 777.
