이슬라마바드 (AP) - 파키스탄에서 알카에다 지도자 오사마 빈 라덴의 사살로 미국과의 긴장이 고조되고 있는 가운데 파키스탄의 미디어가 6개월 만에 두 번 째 로 이슬라마바드주재 CIA지국장의 신원을 보도한 것으로 알려졌다.
AP통신은 보도된 이름은 부정확한 것으로 파악했음에도 불구하고 파키스탄주재 미국 정보기관의 지국장신원이 보도된 것은 파키스탄의 강력한 군부와 정보부의 반격으로 여겨진다. 파키스탄은 자국 내에서 일어난 기습사건으로 자존심이 상한 상태이며 이번 사건으로 인해 미국정부와의 관계가 더욱 악화될 수 있다고 보여진다.
6일 파키스탄의 민간 TV 채널인 ARY 방송은 현재의 지국장이라고 하면서 이름을 방송했고 7일 우파신문인 네이션 지가 뉴스를 받아 보도했다.
파키스탄 정보부와 미국대사관은 이에 대한 논평을 거부한 것으로 알려졌다. AP통신도 미국 정보부원의 존재가 기밀사항이기 때문에 요원의 신원을 보도하지 않았으나 현재 미국당국은 요원을 당장 철수시킬 것인지는 밝히지 않고 있다.
한 전 정보부원 Asad Munir는 이슬라마바드의 CIA 지국장의 이름은 극소수의 사람만이 알고 있으며 만약 신원이 알려진다고 해서 지국장의 신변에 위험은 되지 않을 것이라고 했다.
작년 12월 미국은 CIA 지부장 이름이 알려지면서 요원의 신변이 위험해 질 수 있다고 판단되어 그를 파키스탄에서 철수시킨바있다. 미군의 무인기에 의한 파키스탄 폭격으로 희생된 사람들의 소송을 맡은 변호사가 지국장 이름을 밝히면서 파키스탄 신문에 보도된 것이다.
이번 미정보부 요원의 신원이 밝혀진 것은 2008년 발생한 인도의 뭄바이 테러사건 당시 미국의 소송으로 파키스탄 정보부 책임자 신원이 알려진데 대한 파키스탄 정보부의 보복인가 하는 의심이 꼬리를 물고 있는 것이다.
파키스탄과 같은 이슬람교 국가와 계속해서 협력하는것 외에 다른 대안이 없는 미국 오바마 행정부로서는 파키스탄이 알카에다와 같은 테러조직과 공모하고 있다는 의구심을 갖는 것은 심각한 문제를 야기하게 한다.

Pakistan media report alleged name of CIA official
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani media have reported a name they allege is that of the CIA station chief in Islamabad — the second such potential outing of a sensitive covert operative in six months, and one that comes with tensions running high over the U.S. raid in Pakistan that killed Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.
The Associated Press has learned that the name being reported is incorrect. Nonetheless, the airing of any alleged identity of the U.S. spy agency's top official in this country could be pushback from Pakistan's powerful military and intelligence establishment, which was humiliated over the surprise raid on its soil, and could further sour relations between Washington and Islamabad.
On Friday, the private TV channel ARY broadcast what it said was the current station chief's name. The Nation, a right-wing newspaper, picked up the story Saturday.
A spokesman for Pakistani intelligence declined to comment. The U.S. Embassy also declined immediate comment Monday. The AP is not publishing the station chief's name because he is undercover and his identity is classified. It was not immediately clear whether the Americans would pull him out of the country.
Asad Munir, a former intelligence chief with responsibility said very few people know the name of the CIA station chief in Islamabad. But he said that releasing it would not necessarily jeopardize the station chief's safety.
In December, the CIA pulled its then-station chief out of Pakistan after a name alleged to be his surfaced in public and his safety was deemed at risk. That name hit the local presses after it was mentioned by a lawyer who planned a lawsuit on behalf of victims of U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan.
Suspicions have lingered that outing was orchestrated by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency to avenge an American lawsuit that named its chief over the 2008 terror attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai. The Pakistani agency denied leaking the CIA operative's name.
Suspicions of Pakistani collusion with militants pose an acute problem for the Obama administration because few can see any alternative but to continue engaging the Muslim-majority country.
