[베이루트=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 시리아의 바샤르 알 아사드 대통령이 그에 대한 저항이 1년 가까이 계속되면서 유혈 사태를 종식하라는 국제적 압력을 일축하고 “외부 세력의 지원을 받고 있는 테러리즘”과 싸워나갈 것이라고 강조했다.
미국의 존 매케인 공화당 상원의원이 시리아에 대한 공습을 주도해야 한다는 주장에 대해 오바마 대통령은 시리아 바샤르 아사드 대통령에 대한 미국 일변도의 군사적 공격은 실수라고 지적했다.
현재 미국은 시리아 정부군과 반군 양측에 대해 유혈사태를 중지하도록 요구하는 새로운 유엔 안보리 결의안을 제안하고 있는데 러시아와 중국은 시리아에 대한 안보리 결의안에 대해 거부권을 행사할 것이라고 명백히 하고 있다.
시리아 사나통신은 바샤르 알 아사드 대통령이 “시리아는 국민투표를 통해서 외국의 지원을 받는 테러리즘과 싸우면서 개혁을 통해 새 국가를 만들 수 있다는 결의를 과시했다"고 주장했다고 보도했다.
루퍼트 콜빌 유엔 인권 고등판무관 대변인은 반정부 세력의 거점인 홈스의 군 병원에서 민간인 환자들을 잔인하게 고문한 동영상이 드러나자 쇼킹하다고 말하면서 파문이 일고 있다.
영국 방송에 공개된 동영상에서 민간인 환자들이 눈을 가린 채 다리에 족쇄가 채워져 있었고 환자들 가운데 심하게 고문당한 흔적이 보이는데 고문은 의료진의 행위로 보인다.
시리아 시위사태가 발생하기 전 동맹국이며 시리아와 국경을 맞대고 있는 터기의 레제프 타이이프 에르도안 국무총리는 아사드는 그의 아버지와는 다르게 시리아 인들에 행한 폭력에 대해 처벌을 면할 수 없을 것이라고 주장했다.
그런 가운데 중국의 특사가 7일 시리아 수도 다마스쿠스에 도착해 유혈사태 해결을 위해 즉각 휴전을 요청할 것으로 알려졌다. 중국은 시리아 사태의 정치적 해결을 위한 노력을 주장하면서 외부의 개입에 강력히 반대하고 있다.

Syria's Assad determined to keep figting
BEIRUT (AP) — Syria's president has defied mounting international pressure to end the year-old crackdown on an uprising against him, saying he is determined to go on fighting what he called "foreign-backed terrorism."
After a powerful American senator called for airstrikes on Syria, President Barack Obama said Tuesday that unilateral U.S. military action against President Bashar Assad's regime would be a mistake.
The United States said it is proposing a new United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an end to violence in Syria, first by government forces and then by opposition fighters. Russia and China, powerful allies that have blocked a Security Council resolution against Syria, made clear they were still standing by the regime in Damascus.
"The Syrian people, who have in the past managed to crush foreign plots, ... have again proven their ability to defend the nation and to build a new Syria through their determination to pursue reforms while confronting foreign-backed terrorism," President Bashar Assad said, according to state news agency SANA.
Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, described video that has emerged of torture victims allegedly filmed secretly in the Military Hospital in Homs as "truly shocking."
The video, broadcast this week on Britain's Channel 4, shows wounded civilian victims blindfolded and chained to their hospital beds, some of them with clear torture marks on their bodies, allegedly at the hands of medical staff.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Assad, unlike his father and predecessor, will not escape punishment for the violence he has inflicted. Turkey and Syria, which share a border, were allies before the uprising began.
A special Chinese envoy to Syria arrived in Damascus Tuesday to press the regime for a cease-fire. Beijing remains firmly opposed to any foreign intervention in Syria.
