[워싱턴=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 미국 오바마 대통령이 4일 (현지시간) 이란 핵무기 개발에 대해 미 정부가 공격에 주저하지 않겠다고 강경 방침을 밝혔다.
그러면서 이스라엘의 독자적인 군사공격에 대해서는 자제를 촉구하고 중동에서 전쟁이 일어나 미국이 전쟁에 휩쓸려 들어가는 것을 막으려는 우선 외교적 노력을 강조했다.
오바마 대통령은 "전쟁에 대한 느슨한 얘기“는 세계의 안보를 위태롭게 할 뿐이라고 말하며 이란 핵 개발저지에 대한 외교적 노력이 결실을 맺도록 시간을 달라고 촉구했다.
오바마 대통령이 친 이스라엘 로비그룹에서 한 연설에서 이스라엘과 이란뿐만 아니라 미국의 유대인 유권자, 의회와 국제사회 및 공화당 예비주자들을 향해 최근 이스라엘의 이란 핵시설 공격 설에 관해 이같이 주장했다.
오바마 대통령은 “나는 미국과 미국의 이익을 지키기 위해 필요하다면 무력 사용을 주저하지 않을 것"이라고 말하면서 핵심은 미국은 이란의 핵무기 보유 차단뿐만 아니라 이스라엘을 방어하는 것 만으로 만족하지 않는다는 것으로 관측된다.
오바마 대통령은 이란 핵무기 보유를 막기 위한 제재가 효력을 발휘하고 있는 시점에서 이스라엘의 군사공격 주장을 잠재우면서 중동에서의 전쟁 우려로 급등하고 있는 국제 유가의 인상이 이란만을 이롭게 하고 있다는 주장을 펴고 있다.
오바마 대통령은 이날 오전 워싱턴DC 컨벤션센터에서 열린 `미국ㆍ이스라엘 공공정책위원회(AIPAC)' 행사에서 한 연설을 통해 5일 개최되는 이스라엘 베냐민 네타냐후총리와의 회담에서 이스라엘이 핵 공격을 받기 전에 이란의 핵무기 개발을 저지해야 한다는 이스라엘의 주장에 대해 자제를 촉구할 것으로 해석된다.

Obama assures Israel US force an option on Iran
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama said Sunday he would not hesitate to attack Iran to keep it from getting a nuclear bomb, hoping a forceful assurance will discourage Israel from launching a unilateral strike that could ignite the Middle East and drag the U.S. into war.
Pleading for time for diplomacy to work, Obama warned that "loose talk of war" was only undermining world security.
Addressing a powerful pro-Israel lobbying group, Obama delivered messages to multiple audiences: Israel, Iran, Jewish voters, a restless Congress, a wary international community and three Republican presidential contenders who will speak to the same group Tuesday.
At the core was his bullish assertion that the United States will never settle for containing a nuclear-armed Iran or fail to defend Israel.
"I will not hesitate to use force when it is necessary to defend the United States and its interests," Obama said.
But he framed military force as a last resort, not the next option at a time when sanctions are squeezing Iran. The president seemed intent on quieting a drumbeat for war, saying even the talk of it has driven up the price of oil to the benefit of Iran.
"Now is not the time for bluster," Obama said. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in."
Obama's speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee set a tone for a vital meeting Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose embattled Mideast nation fears it will soon lose a window to strike Iran before it becomes a target of nuclear weapons.
