[디트로이트=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 전 이라크의 사담 후세인 정권을 위해 일한 혐의로 기소된 한 미국인이 죽음을 앞두고 석방을 요구했으나 재판부가 기각한 것으로 알려졌다.
낸시 애드먼드 연방판사는 1일 (현지시간) 자신은 교도소 업무에 관여할 권한이 없다고 말했다. 의사들은 나지브 세마미가 암에 걸려 4개월밖에 살 수 없다고 진단했다.
노스캐롤라이나의 연방 교도관들은 세마미가 석방되면 또 다른 범죄를 져지를 것이라는 우려를 나타내고 담당 교도관은 그의 석방을 거부했다.
세마미 (62)는 이라크에 비밀 정보를 넘겨준 혐의로 46개월 징역형을 받고 현재 1년 복역 중이다. 그는 2003년 사담 후세인 정권을 축출한 미국 주도의 이라크 침공이 있기 전 터키의 미군 병력이동에 관한 정보를 이라크에 알려준 혐의로 기소됐다.

Dying man who aided Saddam denied bid for freedom
DETROIT (AP) — A U.S. man convicted of helping Iraq during the regime of Saddam Hussein has failed to persuade a judge to help him go home to die.
Federal Judge Nancy Edmunds said Thursday she has no authority to intervene in a matter that's up to prison officials. Doctors say Najib Shemami has cancer and less than four months to live.
Officials at a federal prison in North Carolina say Shemami might commit more crimes if released. The warden has declined to approve his release.
The 62-year-old Shemami has served about a year of a 46-month sentence for passing sensitive information to Iraq. He informed Iraq about military movements in Turkey before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that overthrew Saddam.
