[카라카스=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 우고 차베스 베네수엘라 대통령과 관련해 21일 (현지시간) 쿠바의 의사들은 "지난해 암 조직을 제거한 부위에서 새로운 병변을 발견했다"며 "치명적인 병은 아니나 수술을 해야 한다"고 밝혔다.
차베스는 자신의 고향인 바리나스에서 국영 TV방송을 통해 “이 병변은 직경이 2cm 정도의 크기로 아주 명확히 볼 수 있다“ 고 발표했다.
차베스의 수술 발표로 13년에 걸친 그의 장기집권이 올해의 재선으로 새로운 임기가 시작되면 앞으로 6년 더 연장되게 되는 베네수엘라 정치를 요동시키고 있다.
그는 “앞으로 며칠 안에”라는 말 밖에는 언제 어디서 수술을 받을 것인지 말하지 않았다. 그는 그의 내부 핵심층과 만날 것이라면서 자세한 내용은 22일 열리는 내각 회의 이후에 제공할 것을 기대한다고 밝혔다.
차베스 (57)는 작년 6월 쿠바 의사들이 골반에서 암 조직을 제거한 수술보다는 덜 복잡한 수술이라고 말했다.

Venezuelan leader Chavez faces new surgery
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez announced Tuesday that doctors in Cuba found a new lesion in the same place where a cancerous tumor was removed last year and said that he is not deathly ill but will require surgery.
"It is a small lesion of about two centimeters (less than one inch) in diameter, very clearly visible," Chavez told state television from Barinas, his home state.
The announcement thrust Venezuelan politics into seeking re-election this year, hoping to extend his more than 13 years in power with a new six-year term.
He did not say when or where he would undergo the surgery, other than "in the coming days." He said he would meet with his inner circle and expected to provide more details after a Wednesday Cabinet meeting.
Chavez, 57, said the operation should be less complicated than what he underwent in Cuba last June, when doctors removed a tumor from his pelvic region.
Analyst Cynthia Arnson of the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington said Tuesday's announcement seriously complicates Chavez's prospects for re-election on Oct. 7.
