[킨샤사=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 콩고에서 많은 에이즈 환자들이 치료약이 없어 죽어가고 있다.
현재 콩고에는 약 1만 5,000명의 에이즈 환자가 앞으로 3년 내에 사망할 것이라는 예측이 나왔는데 국경 없는 의사회는 '끔찍한 의료 보장'이라는 보고서에서 이들은 생명을 구해줄 약을 기다리다 사망한다고 경고했다.
에이즈 환자의 약 85%가 항 레트로바이러스 치료제를 구입하지 못하고 있는 실정을 프랑스 약어로 MSF라는 단체가 밝혔다.
의사들은 에이즈와의 전쟁에 낮은 우선권을 부여하는 콩고정부와 약 제공자들의 철수를 비난하고 있다. 콩고에 ARV 계의 약을 제공하는 글로벌 펀드는 자금 제공 국가들이 약속을 어기면서 치료약 비용을 급격히 줄이고 있는 것으로 보인다.
콩고정부에 대해서 HIV와 AIDS 환자를 무료로 치료해 준다는 공약을 지켜줄 것을 촉구하는 동시에 자금 제공국에 대해서 ARV 치료를 기다리며 죽어 가는 환자가 없도록 즉각적인 자금 제공을 요청하고 있다.
콩고 인구 7,000만 명 가운데 100만 명 이상이 에이즈 바이러스에 감염된 것으로 추산되는데 이들 중에 35만 명이 ARV 치료가 필요한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 의사들은 약 4만 4,000명 만이 치료를 받고 있으며 전쟁의 상처가 아직 가시지 않은 수단과 소말리아와 맞먹는 15%가 치료를 받고 있는 것으로 보고 있다.

MSF: 15,000 Congo AIDS victims likely will die
KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Some 15,000 AIDS victims in Congo likely will die waiting for lifesaving drugs in the next three years, Doctors Without B orders warned in a report describing "horrific" health care access.
About 85 percent of AIDS patients in need of anti-retroviral medication are not getting any, according to the organization known by its French acronym, MSF.
The doctors blamed Congo's government for giving little priority to fighting AIDS, and the withdrawal of donors. The leading supplier of ARV drugs in Congo, the Global Fund, is sharply reducing funding because countries that finance it have not kept their their promises.
It called for Congo's government to meet its commitment to provide free treatment to people living with HIV and AIDS, and for donors to immediately mobilize resources "to ensure that patients waiting for ARV treatment are not condemned to die."
More than 1 million of Congo's 70 million people are estimated to be infected with the AIDS virus, with 350,000 of them in need of ARVs. Only 44,000 are receiving treatment, the doctors said, giving the Central African nation a coverage rate of just 15 percent, equal only to that of Sudan and war-torn Somalia on the continent.
