[뉴욕=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 애플은 지난해년 4분기 수익이 예상치를 크게 상회하며 새로운 기록을 세웠다.
24일 애플은 4분기 동안에 지난 7-9월의 3분기보다 2배 많은 3,700만 대의 아이폰을 판매하여 2010 크리스마스 시즌 때 보다 2배 많은 이이폰을 팔았다고 밝혔다.
이로 인해 애플이 세계 최대의 스마트폰 제조사로 등장했으며 지난해 최대 스마트폰 제조사였던 삼성전자는 10-12월 기간에 3,500만대를 선적했다고 발표했다.
애플은 지난해 10월 아이폰 4S를 출시하고 미국 제3의 무선 통신사인 스프린트 넥스텔을 통해 아이폰을 추가 판매하기 시작했다.
애플은 4분기 (자사의 회계연도 1분기) 수익은 136억 600만 달러로 주당 순수익이 13.87 달러로 지난해 동기 수익 60억 달러, 주당 수익 6.43 달러에 비해 118% 증가했다고 발표했다.
작년 4분기 아이패드 출하 대수는 1,540만대로 아마존이 지난해 11월 199 달러에 출시한 파이어 킨들의 판매가 이이패드에 전혀 영향을 주지 못하면서 전문가들의 예상이 빗나갔다.
수익 발표가 나온 이후 애플의 주식은 주당 7.9%, 33.03 달러가 올라 453.53 달러에 거래되고 있다.
애플은 지난 4분기 말 현재 976억 달러의 현금 잔고를 갖고 있어 당장 씨티그룹을 매수할 수 있고 주당 100달러의 특별 배당을 할 수 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
만약 24일에도 애플 주가가 이런 추세로 상승한다면 애플은 엑슨 모빌로 부터 세계에서 가장 비싼 회사라는 위상을 되찾을 것으로 예측된다. 두회사는 제1위를 놓고 업치락 뒤치락 하고 있다.

Apple doubles iPhone sales in 1Q
NEW YORK (AP) — After uncharacteristically tepid sales in the July-to-September quarter, Apple came back with a vengeance in the last three months of 2011, vastly exceeding analyst estimates and setting new records.
Apple Inc. on Tuesday said it sold 37 million iPhones in the quarter, double the figure of the previous quarter and more than twice as many as it sold in the holiday quarter of 2010.
The result may make Apple the world's largest maker of smartphones. Samsung Electronics, which held that position for most of last year, has said it expects to report shipping about 35 million smartphones in the October to December quarter.
October saw the launch of the iPhone 4S, and the addition of Sprint Nextel Corp. as an iPhone carrier in the U.S.
Apple said net income in the fiscal first quarter was $13.06 billion, or $13.87 per share. That was up 118 percent from $6 billion, or $6.43 per share, a year ago.
The Cupertino, California, company shipped 15.4 million iPads in the quarter, again more than doubling sales over the same quarter last year. The November launch of Amazon.com Inc.'s $199 Kindle Fire tablet didn't appear to put a dent in the iPad's sales, as some analysts predicted it would.
Apple shares rose $33.03, or 7.9 percent, to $453.53 in extended trading, after the release of the results.
Apple ended the quarter with a cash balance of a staggering $97.6 billion. That's more than enough to buy Citi group Inc. outright, or issue a special dividend of $100 per Apple share.
If the stock rally in extended trading survives into regular trading Wednesday, Apple will retake the position of most valuable company in the world from Exxon Mobil Corp. Apple first unseated Exxon last summer, and the two have been trading places since then.
