위키피디아의 설립자 지미 웨일즈는 18일 위키백과 웹사이트가 미국 의회에서 심의하고 있는 불법복제 금지 법안에 항의하며 차단된다고 발표했다.
트위터에 올린 웨일스의 발표에 의하면 위키백과는 논란이 되고 있는 의회의 스탑 온라인 불법복제법과 지적재산권 보호법에 항의하여 24시간 영어판이 차단된다고 한다.
이 법안은 미국제 상품의 불법복제품 해외 판매를 단속하기 위한 조치로 마련됐다. 비판자들은 이법에 대해서 기술 산업에 피해를 입히고 자유 언론의 권리를 침해한다고 비난하고 있다.
하루에 2천 5백만 명이 방문하는 위키피디아 뿐만 아니라 미국 주요 뉴스 순위 서비스를 제공하는 레딧과 보잉및 타사 사이트도 차단할 것을 계획하고 있다.

Wikipedia to black out Wednesday in protest
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales says the online encyclopedia will black out its website Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in the U.S. Congress.
Wales announced the move on Twitter Monday. The popular online community-sourced information site will shut down its English versions for 24 hours in protest of the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect Intellectual Property Act pending in Congress.
The legislation is designed to crack down on sales of pirated U.S. products overseas. Critics say it could hurt the technology industry and infringes on free-speech rights.
Wikipedia is not the first website to announce plans to shut down but is the most well-known, with an estimated 25 million visitors a day. Reddit, Boing Boing and other online sites also have plans to go dark.
