Japan raises nuke accident severity to highest level
TOKYO, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Japan nuclear agency announced on Tuesday that it has raised the severity level of the accident at the crippled Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant to 7, the worst on an international scale, from the current 5.
According to Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the amount of radiation emissions released at the Fukushima plant was equivalent to 10 percent of Chernobyl.
The level has so far only been applied to the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe. The current assessment is at the same level with the Three Mile Island accident in the United States in 1979.
The Japanese authorities have been battling to keep the troubled Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant crippled by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami under control. The plant has been leaking radioactive substances into environment.

일본당국은 3월 11일 지진과 쓰나미로 붕괴된 후쿠시마 원전 제1발전소를 복구시키려고 사투하는 가운데 대기 중에 방사성 물질을 방출시키고 있다.
