[워싱턴=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 버락 오바마 대통령의 거부권행사 위협에도 불구하고 채무 불이행 사태를 회피하기 위한 조치로 공화당 다수의 미국 하원은 19일 밤 연방 채무액에서 6조 달러를 삭감하고 헌법에 균형예산을 규정하는 의안을 승인했다.

지불 불이행 사태를 해결하려는 양당 지도부의 노력으로 백악관과 상원에서 여러 조치가 상정되어있는 가운데 이번 하원에서 234대 190표의 찬성으로 지출 삭감안이 통과되면서 공화당 초선의원들의 보수 성향을 극명하게 보여주고 있다.

버락 오바마 대통령과 많은 수의 공화당 소속 상원의원이 19일 1조 달러의 세금 인상이 포함된 양당의 적자 감축안에 찬성하고 있는 가운데 대통령은 20일 의회지도자들과 솔직한 의견을 나눌 것으로 보았다.

이러한 상원의 분위기는 주식시장에서 환영을 받은 것으로 나타났다.

오바마 대통령의 거부권행사 위협과 상원의 부결가능성을 예측하면서 미 하원 공화당 의원들은 자신들의 해결방안을 계속 밀고 나갈 뜻을 굽히지 않고 있다.

민주당은 예산삭감과 채무상한선이 맞물려 사회보장, 노인 의료 보험 제도와 여타 재정지원을 받는 수백만 명의 미국인들이 피해를 당할 것으로 우려하고 있다.

Debt hope: Obama praises 'Gang of Six' plan

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defying a veto threat, the Republican-controlled House passed legislation Tuesday night to slice federal spending by $6 trillion and require a Constitutional balanced budget amendment be sent to the states in exchange for averting a threatened government default.

The 234-190 vote marked the power of deeply conservative first-term Republicans, and stood in contrast to stirrings at the White House and in the Senate on a renewed effort at bipartisanship to solve the looming debt crisis.

President Barack Obama and a startling number of Republican senators lauded a bipartisan deficit-reduction plan earlier in the day that includes $1 trillion in higher taxes and the president said he hoped congressional leaders would "start talking turkey" as soon as Wednesday.

Wall Street cheered the news as well.

But House Republicans, insisted on their own approach, despite Obama's veto threat and widespread predictions the measure would die in the Senate.

Democrats said the measure, with its combination of cuts and spending limits, would inflict damage on millions who rely on Social Security, Medicare and other programs. "The Republicans are trying to repeal the second half of the 20th century," said Rep. Sander Levin, D-Michigan.
