[도쿄=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 베이징을 방문한 미국 합참의장이 15일 중국과 미국은 군사문제에 있어 극명한 의견 차를 보이고 있고 상호 신뢰 구축이 요원하다고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.
마이클 멀른 미 합참의장은 중국 군사지도자들과 만남은 “생산적이고 긍정적” 이라고 평하면서도 실질적인 군사관계 수립은 아직도 초보단계이며 여러 가지 어려움에 처해있다고 덧붙였다.
미 합참의장의 중국방문은 4년 만에 이루어 졌으며 이 지역에 있어서 중국의 군사력 팽창과 경제적 영향력의 확대에 대한 우려를 불식시키기 위해 양국 간의 대화와 상호 교환방문을 늘리기 위한 의도로 이루어 졌다.
멀른 합참의장은 중국 천빙더 인민해방군총참모장을 만나고 중국의 선진기술과 군사기지를 방문하게 되어 보람을 느낀다고 밝혔다. 그러나 그는 양국 간에는 광범위한 의견차이가 존재한다고 강조했다.
중국 방문기간에 열린 공동 기자회견에서 중국 천빙더 총참모장은 미국이 경기 불황기에 과도한 군사비를 지출하고 있다고 비난하면서 중국의 군사력 위협에 대한 불안은 부풀려 졌다고 말했다.
중국의 천 총모장은 지난 5월 미국을 방문해서 중국은 군사력에서 미국에 뒤떨어져 있고, 자국의 군사력 증강은 방어적인 것이라고 말했다.
멀른 합참의장은 중국의 주장을 신뢰하지 않는다고 의혹을 표시했다.

US military leader sees stark rifts with China
TOKYO (AP) — China and the United States remain starkly different on military issues and have a long way to go toward building a trusting relationship, the top U.S. military officer said Friday after a bumpy visit to Beijing.
Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he believed his talks with Chinese military leaders were "productive and generally positive." But he added that efforts to create a working military-to-military relationship are still young and so far fraught with difficulties.
Mullen's visit to China was the first of its kind in four years. It was intended to build on efforts to increase communications and ex changes between the two in hopes of easing growing tensions over China's growing military might and economic clout in the region.
Mullen said he was pleased he was afforded access to his counterpart, Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, and given a look at some of China's technology and bases.
But he said the visit also underscored the wide rift between the two nations.
In a joint news conference during Mullen's stay in China, Chen chided the United States for pouring too much money into its military in a time of economic recession. He suggested that fears of a Chinese threat are overstated.
Chen, who made a similar trip to the U.S. in May, stressed that China remains well behind the United States in military capability and said its military growth is purely for defense.
Mullen on Friday said he was not convinced.
