[케이프커내버럴=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 14일 나사의 마지막 우주왕복선 아틀란티스호에서 2번째 컴퓨터 고장이 발생하여 미국 우주인들은 보조 컴퓨터로 아틀란티스를 작동하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.  나사는 “우주선은 현재 안정된 상태로 우주인들의 안전에 영향을 주지 않는다”고 밝혔다.

이번 고장 난 컴퓨터는 지난 10일에도 고장을 일으킨 적이 있다. 

우주인들은 15일 다시 컴퓨터 고장원인을 찾아볼 예정으로 있는데 10일 발생한 고장은 우주왕복선이 국제 우주정거장에 도킹하기 바로 전에 일어났었다. 엔지니어들은 전기 스위치 전환기에 문제가 있는 것으로 파악하고 있다.

우주왕복선이 균형을 잡는데 필요한 컴퓨터 네트웨크에 연결되는 컴퓨터가 고장을 일으킨 것이며 아틀란티스호가 귀환할 때 백업으로 갖추어야 할 컴퓨터이다.

Astronauts woken up by second computer failure

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) — After getting a little free time Thursday, the last space shuttle crew was woken up to deal with a second computer failure on Atlantis.

The astronauts switched to another of shuttle's five main computers, and NASA said the shuttle was in "stable condition with no concerns for the crew's safety." A computer had also failed on Sunday.

The crew had gone to bed late Thursday afternoon, but Mission Control woke them up about 1½ hours later because of the computer trouble. NASA said they would troubleshoot the problem on Friday.

Sunday's computer failure occurred just before the shuttle linked up with the International Space Station. Engineers said the problem was likely caused by a bad switch throw. That computer was working again Monday after new software was installed.

The check-and-balance network of computers provides redundancy during the most critical phases of the mission, and will be needed when Atlantis lands next week to wrap up the 30-year shuttle era.

Earlier Thursday, the crew got some time off after a hectic week to savor their historic experience.
