[카불=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 아프가니스탄 카불을 방문하고 있는 미국 상원의원은 미국 버락 오바마 대통령이 2012년까지 33,000명의 미군 병력을 철수시키려는 계획은 아프가니스탄군의 사기를 꺾고 무장봉기를 부추기면서 탈레반 반군 퇴치 노력을 저해하게 된다고 말했다.
존 매케인, 조 리버만, 린지 그래햄 상원의원은 3일 아프가니스탄 보안군의 강화에 고무되었으나 오바마 대통령의 철군계획으로 아프가니스탄 동부의 탈레반에게 타격을 주고 있지 못하게 될 것으로 비판했다.
매케인 의원은 현재 아프가니스탄 국제안보지원군 132,000 명 가운데 90,000명의 미군 병력이 작전을 수행하는데 부족하다는 우려를 표명했다.

McCain: Afghan drawdown 'unnecessary risk'
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Three U.S. senators visiting Kabul have said they are worried that President Barack Obama's planned withdrawal of 33,000 American troops by September 2012 could undermine Afghan morale, embolden the insurgency and hamper efforts to defeat Taliban fighters.
John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham said Sunday they are heartened by the progress of Afghan security forces, but worry that Obama's withdrawal plan could deplete American military strength before dealing a decisive blow to the Taliban, especially in eastern Afghanistan. That part of the country is a haven for the Afghan and Pakistani wings of the Taliban, and al-Qaida affiliates.
McCain — during a stop at the Kabul headquarters of the foreign military contingent, called the International Security Assistance Force — said he's concerned there may not be enough American troops for a move from southern Afghanistan to the east to "finish the job there." There are currently about 90,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan among a total international force of more than 132,000.
