[타이베이=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 8일 대만 축산농민들이 성장 촉진제를 먹인 미국산 소고기 수입을 허가하려는 정부의 계획에 반대하며 대만 총통에게 대해 미국에 “노”라고 말하라고 외치면서 거센 항의 시위를 펼쳤다.

이번 재선한 마잉주 총통이 미국과의 관계 강화를 위해 오랜 기간 논란이 되어온 소고기 수입 현안을 해결하려고 하면서 축산 농가의 반대에 부딪친 것이다.

이번 주 대만 내각은 소의 성장을 촉진시키는 사료 첨가제인 락토파민이 미소량 검출된 소고기의 수입 금지를 해제할 계획을 발표했다. 정부는 수입반대를 완화시키기 위해 미국산 소고기에 라벨을 붙일 것을 약속했으나 국회의 승인을 받아야 한다.

돼지 사육 축산농민들은 반미 구호를 외치고 영문으로 “총통, 미국에 감히 안 된다고 말할 수 없는가? 라고 쓴 슬로건을 들고 시위를 벌렸다. 이 시위에는 미국산 소고기 수입을 가장 강력하게 반대한 수명의 민진당 야당의원들도 참가했다.

돼지 축산농민들은 소고기 수입금지가 풀리면 건강에 대한 우려가 확산되면서 고기 제품의 소비가 위축돼 자신들의 생계가 위태로워진다고 우려하고 있다.

미국은 락토파민이 100여국에서 합법화된 안전한 첨가제라고 주장하고 있으나 반면 유럽연합과 중국은 이것을 금지약품으로 지정하고 있다.

Taiwanese protest US beef import plan

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Thousands of Taiwanese farmers staged a raucous protest Thursday against a government plan to allow the import of U.S. beef containing a growth drug, challenging their president to "say no" to Washington.

The protest outside the island's ornate legislative building came as newly re-elected President Ma Ying-jeou seeks to strengthen ties with the U.S. by resolving the long-standing beef dispute. The beef issue has stalled trade talks crucial to keeping up the island's competitive edge in global trade.

Protesters later marched to the Agriculture Council — Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture — and pelted police with pig excrement and rotten eggs. Shield-wielding officers prevented them 　from entering the building after they broke through an outer security barrier.

The Cabinet announced this week it plans to lift a ban on U.S. beef containing minimal traces of ractopamine, a feed additive for meat leaning. The government sought to appease opponents by promising to ensure that vendors properly label their meat products. The plan needs legislative approval.

Many of the protesting hog farmers chanted anti-U.S. beef slogans and held English-language placards saying "President, Dare You Say No to USA?" They were 　joined by several lawmakers 　from the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party, which has been in the forefront of the anti-U.S. beef movement.

Hog farmers fear that lifting the ban could spark widespread health concerns that would affect consumption of other meat products, undermining their livelihoods.

The U.S. has long been the most important foreign partner for diplomatically isolated Taiwan, which China claims is part of its territory.

Washington maintains that ractopamine is a safe additive, legalized in more than 100 countries. Notable exceptions are the European 　Union and China.
