Nobel winner feared euro debt crisis decade ago
One of the winners of this year's Nobel prize in economics says a decade ago he feared the euro would face a crisis because the currency was not given sufficient financial support.
American Christopher Sims, who shares the $1.5 million award with countryman Thomas Sargent, says in a 2002 paper he concluded that the common European currency, now shared by 17 EU members, would be in trouble because it lacked "clear fiscal backing" when it was created.
Sims spoke to reporters Wednesday in Stockholm, where the laureates in economics, physics, chemistry and medicine will collect their prizes at an awards ceremony Saturday.
Sims and Sargent won the economics prize for research on the cause-and-effect relationship between the economy and government policy.
