23일(금) 인디아타임스가 보도에 의하면 연초류(담배)에 의한 발병 원인이 전체 암 발병의 40%가 넘었다.
이 신문은 인도의학원을 인용해 콜카타 지역의 남자의 암의 44.4%가 흡연에 의한 것인데, 첸나이에서는 41.4%, 델리에서는 39.4%, 뭄바이에서는 39.2%로 각각 나타나고 있다.
첸나이 지역의 여자는 암 발병 원인으로 가장 높은 수치인 15.2%를 보였고, 뭄바이 13.5%, 콜카다는 12.3%, 델리는 11% 순으로 나타났다. 방갈로르 지역의 남부 주도에서 남자 암의 35%와 여자 암의 14.3%가 흡연과 관련된 것이었다.

NEW DELHI, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Smoking is a major cause of cancers in India, with more than 40 percent of cancers among them being caused by tobacco, reported The Times of India Friday.
The newspaper quoted Indian Council of Medical Research as saying that 44.4 percent of cancers in men in Kolkata are caused by tobacco, while 41.4 percent of cancers among men are caused by smoking in Chennai, 39.4 in Delhi and 39.2 percent in Mumbai.
Women from Chennai record the highest number of tobacco related cancers with 15.2 percent, followed by Mumbai with 13.5 percent, Kolkata with 12.3 percent and Delhi with 11 percent.
In the southern metropolis of Bangalore, 35 percent of cancers in men and 14.3 percent of cancers in women are related to tobacco consumption, said the report.
