14일 오전 미국 외무부 차관보 제프리 펠트만은 트리폴리에서 기자들에게 워싱턴은 이미 어깨에 매는 미사일을 비롯해 이페릿(미란성 독가스)과 같은 위험한 화학 물질의 확산을 막기 위해 리비아의 새 지도자들과 함께 협력하고 있다고 전했다. 그는 전 시민군들로 이뤄진 국가변화협의회와의 대화에서 “(무기 확산은) 리비아뿐 아니라 북아프리카 지역 전체에 잠재적인 위협이 될 수 있다”고 말했다.
이페릿과 다른 화학 물질을 포함한 비재래식 무기의 확산이 가장 큰 우려를 낳고 있으나, 펠트만 차관보는 이페릿이 “화학무기금지기구(OPCW)의 규정을 준수한 대용량 형태로 컨테이너에 저장되어 있다”며 “미국이 감시한 바에 따르면 원래 있어야 장소에 저장되어 있다”고 밝혔다.
한편 UN의 최고 무기 감시원은 지난 주 리비아의 나머지 화학무기 비축량이 안전한 것으로 사료된다고 발표한 바 있다.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) -- The potential proliferation of both conventional and unconventional weapons in Libya after six months of civil war is a "key concern" for the United States, a senior American official said Wednesday.
The conflict that ended Moammar Gadhafi's 42-year rule and sent the former dictator into hiding also threw open the gates to his regime's extensive armories. The country's new leaders, who are struggling to establish a government, have failed to secure many of the weapons caches.Witnesses have watched looters, former rebel fighters or anyone with a truck carry them away.
Earlier Wednesday, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jeffery Feltman told reporters in Tripoli that Washington already has people working with Libya's new rulers about the possible proliferation of shoulder-fired missiles, as well as dangerous chemicals like mustard gas. "This is certainly an issue we are concerned with, the Libyan officials are concerned with, because it poses potential risks not only to Libyans, but to the region as a whole," said Feltman, who was in Tripoli for talks with the former rebels' National Transitional Council.
The greatest concern, however, is the proliferation of unconventional weapons, such as mustard gas and other chemical agents.
Despite worries about other weapons, Feltman said "to the best of our knowledge" stores of mustard gas "are containerized in bulk form accountable to the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), and we believe from monitoring that they are where they are supposed to be."
Last week, the U.N. chief weapons watchdog said Libya's remaining chemical weapon stockpiles are believed to be secure.
