[뉴델리=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 14일(현지시간) 인도 남부지방에서 열차가 충돌해 10명의 사람이 사망하고 많은 사람들이 부상당하는 사고가 발생했다.
경찰은 이 사고로 사망자 10명, 부상자 52명의 인명피해가 집계됐다고 밝혔다.
지역단체장 나가라잔은 사고 발생 초기에 비가와 구조 작업에 방해가 됐으나 모든 부상자들을 병원으로 이송했다고 전했다. 인도의 기자들은 이 사고로 몇 편의 열차 운행이 취소되거나 연기됐다고 보고했다.
사고의 원인은 아직 수사중에 있다고 철도청 장관 디네쉬 트리베디가 밝혔다.
인도의 철도는 매일 1,400만명의 승객들을 태우는 세계에서 가장 큰 철도 중 하나다. 보통 사고가 발생하면 부실한 점검과 사람들의 과실에 대부분의 책임이 있다.

Police: India train collision kills 10
NEW DELHI (AP) — A passenger train collided with another train stopped at a signal in southern India, killing 10 people and injuring dozens more, police said Wednesday.
By early Wednesday, the death toll stood at 10, police official K.M. Babu told The Associated Press. Another 52 people were injured, he added.
S. Nagarajan, the district administrator, said rains initially hampered rescue efforts but all the injured had been moved to hospitals.
Press Trust of India reported that several trains were canceled or delayed because of the accident.
The accident's cause was being investigated, said Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi.
India's railroad network is one of the largest in the world and carries about 14 million passengers each day. Accidents are common, with most blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
