[KNS뉴스통신=이희원 기자] 최근 천문학자들이 새롭게 발견한 50개의 태양계 외 행성들 가운데 16개의 행성에서 물이 존재할 가능성이 높은 이른바 ‘슈퍼지구’가 발견됐다.
12일(현지시각) AP통신은 유럽의 천체연구전문기관인 유럽남부천문대(ESO:European Southern Observatory)의 말을 인용해 천문학자들이 새롭게 찾아낸 태양계 외 50개의 행성들 중 생명체 생존에 필수적인 물이 존재할 가능성이 높은 슈퍼지구가 포함됐다고 보도했다.
이어 ESO는 슈퍼지구인 ‘HD85512b’이라 불리는 이 행성이 태양과는 36광년 떨어져있고 지구의 3.6배 크기로 표면에 물이 존재하며 태양보다 작은 크기로 기온이 낮은 주황색 항성 HD85512의 주위를 59일 주기로 돌고 있다고 전했다.
또한 행성의 대기에 두터운 구름층까지 존재, 낮은 기온이 유지될 경우 지구와 같은 액체 형태의 물이 존재할 가능성이 높다고 덧붙였다.
그러나 천문학자들은 바위투성이 일지 목성과 같이 가스가 차 있을 지의 여부가 확인된 바 없어 확신하기는 아직 일러 충분한 연구와 분석이 필요할 것으로 전망했다.
이번에 발견된 행성 ‘HD85512b’는 지난 2007년 칠레에서 확인된 ‘글리제581d’에 이은 두 번째 슈퍼지구이다.
