전문가들은 이 황제 펭귄에 달아 놓은 위성 추적장치가 떨어졌을 가능성이 가장 크다고 AP통신에 전했다. 연구원들이 작은 추적장치를 초강력 접착제로 깃털에 부착해 놓았는데 이 장치는 내년 초에 해피피트가 털갈이를 할 때 떨어지도록 설계됐다. 그러나 펭귄을 뉴질랜드 남쪽 바다로 풀어준 뒤 겨우 5일 만인 9일 추적장치가 작동을 멈춘 것.
해피피트가 범고래나 바다표범에 의해 잡아 먹혔거나 자연사, 또는 전송장치가 고장이 났을 가능성도 제기되고 있다.
이 해양성 조류는 지난 6월 뉴질랜드의 한 해변에서 발견됐다. 모래를 눈으로 착각하고 먹는 바람에 병에 걸렸으나 그 뒤 두 달간 웰링턴 동물원의 수의사들이 위세척을 실시하고 생선으로 이루어진 식단으로 그의 체중을 늘리면서 건강을 회복했다. 후에 연구원들은 해피피트의 깃털에 위성 추적장치를 장착한 뒤 야생으로 돌려보냈다.
일부 과학자들은 다시 해피피트의 소식을 들을 가능성도 포기하지 않고 있는 한편 뉴질랜드 환경보존부의 프로그램 매니저 피터 심슨은 “그는 아마도 지금 전송장치 없이 행복하게 수영을 하고 있는 중일 것”이라며 “원래 바다에서 수영을 하며 살도록 태어났으니, 그를 야생에 풀어 준 것은 잘한 일이라 확신한다”고 전했다.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- The wayward penguin known as "Happy Feet" is missing in the Southern Ocean.
Experts tell The Associated Press the most likely scenario is that the emperor penguin's satellite transmitter fell off. The small unit was attached to his feathers with super glue and was designed to fall off when he molted early next year. But the unit stopped transmitting Friday, just five days after the penguin was released into the sea south of New Zealand.
Other possibilities are that Happy Feet was eaten by an orca or a leopard seal; that he died of natural causes; or that the transmitter malfunctioned.
The aquatic bird was discovered on a New Zealand beach in June. He became sick from eating sand which he likely mistook for snow, but was nursed back to health over two months at the Wellington Zoo. Veterinarians repeatedly flushed his stomach to remove sand and fattened him up on a diet of fish.
"We think the most likely scenario is tag detachment," Lay said. "The intention was always that the transmitter would fall off."
That's the scenario favored by Peter Simpson, a program manager at New Zealand's department of conservation. "Who knows? He's probably swimming along quite happily without a transmitter on his back," Simpson said.
"I'm still confident we did the right thing by releasing him back into the wild," Simpson added. "He's a marine bird and he's designed to swim and he's designed to live in the ocean."
Scientists say there's an outside possibility they may again hear from Happy Feet. The penguin also has been fitted with a transponder chip under his skin, similar to those used to identify household cats and dogs. The chip will be activated if the penguin turns up near certain monitored emperor colonies in Antarctica.
