[뉴델리=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 인도를 방문 중인 미국 힐러리 클린턴 국무장관이 19일 테러와의 전쟁을 하고 있는 인도에 대해 미국의 지원을 약속했다.
뉴델리에서 열린 클린턴 국무장관과 인도 정부당국의 회담에서 테러와의 전쟁, 파키스탄 핵 우려, 아프가니스탄에서 미국의 철군이 주요의제로 등장할 것으로 보인다.
2008년 뭄바이에서 166명의 희생자가 발생한 테러사건이후 지난 주 뭄바이 주택가 3곳에서 최악의 동시다발 테러가 발생했다.
미국 클린턴 장관은 미국이 인도와 파키스탄 사이에서 어려운 힘의 균형 조정자 역할을 수행하면서 파키스탄을 자극하는 발언을 자제하는 모습을 보였다.
미국은 파키스탄이 아프가니스탄의 군사작전에 집중할 수 있도록 인도와 파키스탄간의 평화회담이 속도를 내기를 바라고 있다.
인도와 미국 간의 냉랭했던 관계가 최근 몇 년 사이에 인도 경제가 활성화되어 미국의 주요 시장으로 등장하고 동남아에서 인도가 민주주의 국가로 발전하면서 안정된 동맹국가로 인정하고 있다.
미국 버락 오바마 대통령은 인도의 만모한 싱 총리의 미국 국빈 방문에서 인도를 새로운 지역 세력으로 치켜세운바 있다.

Clinton vows US support for India in terror fight
NEW DELHI (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton promised Tuesday to give full U.S. support to Indian efforts to protect itself from terror attacks, less than a week after a triple bombing killed 19 people in the financial capital of Mumbai.
The fight against terror, India's concerns over nuclear-armed rival Pakistan and U.S. withdrawal plans for Afghanistan were expected to dominate talks between Clinton and Indian officials in New Delhi.
The attacks in three busy Mumbai neighborhoods last week were the worst terror strike in the country since 10 Pakistan-based gunmen rampaged through Mumbai in 2008, killing 166 people. Police have yet to name suspects in the blasts.
Clinton did not mention Pakistan during her remarks, an apparent sign of the difficult balancing act the U.S. is trying to play between its two competing allies.
The U.S. is eager for fragile peace talks between India and Pakistan to pick up steam, in part to allow Pakistan to focus its forces on the chaotic Afghan b order.
Once frosty relations between India and the United States have warmed considerably in recent years as Washington has looked to democratic India as stable ally in the turbulent South Asia region and its growing economy as a valuable market for U.S. goods.
President Barack Obama hosted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his first state dinner and visited India for three days last year, praising it as a new regional power.
