[원저우=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 중국의 고속열차 추돌사건은 지난 30년 중국의 눈부신 발전이 일반 중국인들의 안전과 환경을 희생하면서 이뤄낸 것을 상징적으로 보여주고 있다.

28일 중국 철도부 관계자는 이번 열차사고는 통신장비의 설계 결함과 인재가 겹쳐서 발생한 것으로 발표했다.

상하이 철도국 고위인사 3명의 사퇴를 불러온 이번 사건에서 당국은 사고 희생자의 구조보다는 열차 운행 재개에 급급해 사고 현장을 황급히 치우면서 국민들의 분노를 사고 있다.

중국 중앙 방송은 지난 22일 사고로 40명이 사망하고 190 여명이 부상당했다고 보도했다.

보통의 경우 국가정책에 호응하던 국영 미디어도 이번 사건에 대해 당국의 투명성 재고와 책임 소재를 명확히 할 것을 요구하고 있다.

중국판 트위터인 신와 웨보에는 수백만 명이 메시지를 달고 당국의 공식적인 해명을 요구하고 있다.

중국인들의 끓어오르는 분노를 가라앉히기 위해 원자바오 총리가 28일 사고현장에서 기자회견을 열고 철저한 조사가 진행되고 있으며 책임자를 엄중히 처벌할 것이라고 말했다.

Relatives mourn China train crash victims

WENZHOU, China (AP) — Public anger has grown as the crash of the two high-speed trains near the eastern city of Wenzhou has come to be seen as emblematic of the problems with China's breakneck development over the past three decades, sometimes achieved at the expense of public safety and the environment.

A railway official said Thursday that design flaws in signal equipment and human error caused the crash.

The firing of three top officials at the Shanghai Railway Bureau has done little to tamp down criticism that authorities made incomplete attempts to rescue survivors while ordering tracks swiftly cleared to restore service.

State broadcaster CCTV said the death toll rose to 40 Friday when one of the more than 190 survivors died.

Reports even in the usually docile state-controlled media have called for greater transparency and accountability 　　from authorities. On the popular Twitter-like site Sina Weibo users posted millions of messages, many questioning official explanations and circulating amateur photographs and videos of the crash site.

In a sign of the government's concerns about mounting public anger, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday held a rare public news conference at the crash site and said a thorough investigation was under way and that those found responsible for the crash would be severely punished.
