칠레의 코든콜레 (Cordon Caulle) 화산폭발에서 발생한 화산재로 인해 남아메리카 대륙 남부지역의 항공기가 발이 묶여있고 겨울 관광 시즌이 타격을 받고 있다.

인구 14만의 아르헨티나 서부 휴양도시 바릴로체 마을은 일년에 25만의 관광객이 찾아온다.

아르헨티나 국립대학의 과학자들은 6월 4일 화산폭발로 인해 70개의 원자폭탄과 동일한 에너지를 분출했다고 밝혔다. 화산재가 멀리 떨어진 호주와 뉴질랜드의 항공기의 발도 묶어 놓고 있다.
한 항공업계 관계자는 이번 화산폭발로 항공업계가 5천만 달러의 손실을 입었다고 발표했다.

Chilean volcano darkens Argentine tourism outlook

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The 100 million tons of pyroclastic ash and rock spewed by an Andean volcano has meant hundreds of millions of dollars in losses for communities more accustomed to profiting from the dramatic mountain landscape.

The Cordon Caulle volcano opened a new gash along a ridge just across the border and upwind from Argentina. For six weeks now, it has been belching ash into the sky, grounding flights across the lower third of South America for most of the winter tourist season.

Bariloche's population of 140,000 usually hosts 250,000 tourists this time of year, including 40,000 Brazilians. The municipal government this week estimated losses at $150 million.

Since the eruption began June 4, the volcano has released energy equal to 70 atomic bombs, or 2 percent of the world's electricity capacity, during the first week alone, scientists at Argentina's National University of Rio Negro calculated. The ash has blown around the Southern Hemisphere several times, grounding jets as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Airline industry losses could total $50 million, said Helane Becker, an airlines analyst with Dahlman Rose & Company.
