[뉴욕=신화/KNS] 20일 뉴욕에서 미국의 실업률이 급증하면서 심각한 문제로 대두되면서 기업가, 정치가, 학계대표들이 한자리에 모여 일자리 창출을 위한 방안을 모색한 것으로 알려졌다.
현재 정부발표에 의하면 미국의 실업률은 9%을 상회하는 것으로 나타났다.
미 백악관 발레리 재럿 선임고문은 고용창출을 위해 스마트 정부가 필요하고 정부는 낭비를 줄이면서 스마트한 투자로 경제성장을 이루어야 할 것으로, 그녀는 “미래를 위해 교육에 투자를 아끼지 말아야 한다“고 말했다.
오바마 행정부는 작년 9월 경제 성장을 촉진시키고 새로운 고용창출을 위해 500억 달러 프로그램을 제안한 바 있다.
UBS 그룹 아메리카 로버트 월프 회장은 정부는 교육 (과학, 기술, 공학, 수학)에 중점을 두어야 한다고 말하면서 민간부문도 고용창출을 위해 중요한 역할을 담당해야 한다고 덧붙였다.
매년 열리는 뉴욕포럼에는 기업계 대표, 경제학자, 정책담당자들이 모여 현 글로벌 경제위기에 대처하기 위해 창의적 아이디어를 찾는데 목적을 두고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
“성장에 헌신”이라고 명명된 올해의 포럼에서는 경제성장이 고용증대로 연결될 수 있도록 하는데 초점을 맞추었고 포럼에서 도출된 구체적인 조치는 11월에 프랑스 칸에서 열리는 G20 정상회담에 제출하게 된다.

Panel seeks solutions to U.S. job problem
NEW YORK, June 20 (Xinhua) -- A panel of U.S. businessmen, politicians and academics discussed ways to create more jobs here Monday, as the country's rising unemployment added to the urgency of the issue.
Latest government data showed the U.S. unemployment rate has climbed above 9 percent.
"Smart government" is needed to address the job issue, said Valerie Jarrett, senior advisor to President Barack Obama. She also stressed that the government should cut waste and invest smartly to help create jobs and maintain economic growth. "If we're going to invest in the future, we have to invest in education."
The Obama administration has proposed a 50-billion-U.S.-dollar program last September to boost infrastructure, in a bid to stimulate economic growth and create jobs.
The government should focus on education, particularly on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), Robert Wolf, chairman of UBS Group Americas and president of UBS Investment Bank said, adding that the private sectors also play an important role in bringing significant profits and helping creating jobs.
The New York Forum, an annual event, brings together business leaders, economists and policymakers to develop innovative ideas addressing current challenges facing the global economy.
With the theme "Committed to Growth," this year's forum focuses on strengthening the connection between economic growth and job growth. The specific action items emerging from the forum will be presented to the Group of 20 Summit in Cannes, France, in November.
