파키스탄군, 탈레반 공격당한 해군기지 탈환 [AP통신]

카라치, 파키스탄 (AP) - 파키스탄군 특공대가 탈레반이 22일 파키스탄 해군기지를 급습, 점령당하면서 많은 사망자가 발생한 이후 기지를 재탈환하면서 탈레반의 첩자가 보안당국에 침투했다는 의혹을 불러일으키고 파키스탄이 보유하고 있는 핵탄두의 위험성에 대한 우려를 자아내게 하고 있다.

오사마 빈 라덴 사살에 대한 보복 차원에서 이뤄진 이번 공격으로 파키스탄정부는 미국과 탈레반과 알-카에다 양측으로부터 공격을 받고 있다.

파키스탄 탈레반은 2007년 이후 수백 건의 공격을 주도했으며 이번 해군기지공격을 자신들이 주도했다고 주장했다.

알-카에다와 탈레반 반군은 현 미국이 지지하는 세속적인 정권을 강경파 이슬람교도가 지배하는 정권으로 교체를 시도하고 있는 상황이다.

현재 파키스탄 정부는 핵무기 병참기지의 위치를 밝히지 않고 있는 가운데 탈레반이 공격한 해군기지에서 불과 24㎞ 떨어진 거리에 핵무기 병참기지가 자리 잡고 있는 것으로 보여 핵무기 안전성도 크게 우려되고 있다.

Pakistani troops retake naval base from militants

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani commandos have recaptured a major naval base from Taliban attackers after a bloody and humiliating 18-hour standoff that raised questions about militant infiltration in the security services and the safety of the volatile country's nuclear warheads.

The Pakistani Taliban, an al-Qaida-allied group blamed for hundreds of attacks since 2007, claimed responsibility for the assault on the naval base.

Al-Qaida and Taliban militants seek to replace Pakistan's secular, American-backed leaders with hardline Islamist rule.

Pakistan does not reveal where it keeps its nuclear weapons. The Mehran base is 15 miles from Masroor air base, the country's biggest, and a rumored home to some nuclear weapons.
