[리마, 페루=AP/KNS] 페루 수도 리마 시장이 리마 시에서 태평양 해안을 내려다보는 언덕위에 브라질 리오(Rio)의 상징인 구주 예수 상(Christ the Redeemer)을 닮은 예수 상을 세우려는 알란 가르시아 페루 대통령의 계획을 반대하고 나서면서 무산될 위기에 처했다.

수자나 빌라란 리마 시장은 가르시아 대통령이 6월 29일 취임식 날 “태평양의 예수”상을 세우려는 계획을 발표하기 전에 자기에게 사전에 통보하지 않았다고 밝혔다. 이 예수상은 높이가 22 미터이고 15미터 높이의 좌대위에 세우게 된다.

빌라란 시장은 이 예수상이 적절하지 못하고 독창성이 없다면서 유명한 리오 데 자네이로의 예수상을 닮았다고 비난했다.

13일 빌라란 시장은 예수상을 리마 시보다는 이미 완공된 페루와 브라질 항구를 연결하는 대양 간 고속도로를 따라서 세우는 것이 더 적절할 것으로 기자들에게 말했다.

Lima mayor: No Christ statue to overlook coast

LIMA, Peru (AP) — The mayor of the Peru's capital may have spoiled President Alan Garcia's plans to erect a huge statue of Jesus similar to Brazil's iconic Christ the Redeemer on a hill overlooking Lima's Pacific coastline.

Lima Mayor Susana Villaran says Garcia didn't ask her before announcing on Friday his intention to have "Christ of the Pacific" put up for a June 29 inauguration. The statue will be 22 meters (72 feet) high and stand atop a 15-meter (49-foot) base.

Villaran has criticized its suitability and lack of originality — it resembles the famed Rio de Janeiro work.

She told reporters Monday there are plenty of other places to put it besides in her coastal city, such as along the nearly completed Interoceanic highway that will link Peruvian with Brazilian ports.
