Western Australia's beaches most polluted in nation: report
SYDNEY, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Western Australia (WA) has
the dirtiest beaches in the nation, with more than 1000 items
of rubbish per site, a new report found on Tuesday.
The 2010 Clean Up Australia Rubbish Report showed that WA beaches had an average of 1093 rubbish items per site.

of.
"It is unacceptable that your beaches and coastal areas
are considered to be giant ashtrays and rubbish bins," Kiernan
said in Perth on Tuesday.
The large amount of waste on WA's coastline found its way
into the Indian Ocean to harm marine life, he said.
Kiernan said WA produced more than five million tonnes of
waste a year and sent 77 percent of it to landfills, which was
higher than any other state, making WA "a serious rubbish
offender".
"It's time for WA to stop sweeping your rubbish problems
under the rug and take responsibility to recycle and dispose
of rubbish more responsibly," Kiernan said.
In WA, 18 percent of the waste found was metal, well
above the national average of 12 percent, while the amount of
glass found was twice the national average of 10 percent.
He urged people to register to help on Clean Up Australia
Day on Sunday, March 6.
Nationally, an estimated 588,000 volunteers removed
15,560 tonnes from 7073 sites in 2010, making Clean Up
Australia Day the largest community participation event in
Australia.
