[타이베이=AP/KNS] 대만 입법부는 대만에서 4번째인 원자력 발전소 건설에 소요되는 140억 대만 달러 (미화 4억8천2백만)를 승인한 것으로 알려졌다.

13일 국민당이 다수당인 입법부는 일본의 지진여파로 핵위기가 발생하면서 원자력 발전에 대한 국민들의 우려가 증가하는 가운데 이 자금사용을 승인 한 것이다.

지진이후 야당 차이잉원 총통후보가 원자력 이용을 점진적으로 줄여 나갈 것을 제시한 가운데 마잉주 총통은 대만의 원자력 계획을 계속할 뜻을 나타냈다.

현재 대만에서 운영 중인 원자력 발전소 3곳 가운데 2곳가 인구 6백5십만 명이 사는 대도시인 타이베이시에서 20km 내에 위치해 있다.

Taiwan passes funding for nuclear power plant

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan's legislature has approved NT$14 billion ($482.76 million) for the ongoing construction of a fourth nuclear power plant on the island.

Monday's move by the ruling Nationalist-controlled legislature comes despite rising public concerns over the safety of nuclear power after a powerful earthquake triggered a nuclear disaster in Japan.

Since the quake, President Ma Ying-jeou has said he will continue Taiwan's nuclear power program, while main opposition presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen has proposed to gradually eliminate the use of nuclear power.

Two of Taiwan's three operating plants are located only 12 miles (20 kilometers) from metropolitan Taipei and its population of 6.5 million people.
