현재 75세의 블래터 회장은 스위스 출신 기업가로 1998년부터 회장으로 재임해왔다. 이번 FIFA 총회 선거에서 당선됨으로 앞으로 4년간 세계 축구계 집행부의 수장으로 마지막 임기를 맡게 되었다.
블래터 회장은 총 203명 가운데 186명의 찬성표를 얻었다.
단독 출마에 대해 많은 논란이 있는 가운데 일주일만에 치러진 선거에서 당선이 발표되자 블래터 회장은 많은 기립 박수갈채를 받으며 등단했다.
스캔들이 터지자 블래터 회장은 앞으로의 월드 컵 주최 도시 선정에는 현 24명의 집행위원 대신 208명 전 회원의 투표로 결정하자는 개혁안을 총회에서 승인하면서 세계축구협회의 개혁에 나섰다.
블래터 회장은 집행위원에 여성위원도 참여하도록 계획하고 있다고 말했다.
영국 축구협회의 FIFA가 부패혐의로 얼룩진 가운데 블래터 회장 단독 출마에 반대하며 투표를 연기하자는 주장이 총회에서 압도적인 다수로 부결되면서 즉시 선거가 진행되었다. 영국의 데이비드 번스타인 축구협회회장은 선거 실시 전에 회의장을 떠났다.

FIFA re-elects Blatter as president
ZURICH (AP) — Sepp Blatter was re-elected FIFA president on Wednesday after a major bribery scandal left him as the only candidate to deal with a sport reeling from a wave of corruption allegations.
Blatter, a 75-year-old Swiss executive who has been in office since 1998, was handed a final four-year term as head of football's governing body in a vote at FIFA's congress.
He won 186 votes out of 203 ballots.
After a tense week of drama and controversy surrounding his unchallenged candidacy, Blatter was beaming as he came into the congress hall to a standing ovation and warm applause after the result was announced.
He immediately took steps toward major reform by winning the assembly's backing for his proposal to have future World Cup hosts selected in a vote of all 208 federations instead of the 24-man executive committee. The congress also endorsed his plans to revamp the ethics committee and bring in more transparency.
Blatter said he also planned to appoint a woman to the executive committee.
FIFA will meet again later this year to formally adopt the measures.
The election went ahead after England's call for a postponement of Blatter's unopposed "coronation" amid the ethics crisis was overwhelmingly rejected by the delegates. England's FA chairman David Bernstein left ahead of the vote.
