[모나코=AP/KNS뉴스통신] FC바르셀로나의 스페인 출신 미드필더 안드레스 이니에스타(28)가 유럽축구연맹(UEFA)이 선정한 '2012 유럽 최고의 선수'상을 받는 위업을 달성했다.
30일(현지시각) 모나코 그리말 포럼에서 펼쳐진 '2012-2013 UEFA 챔피언스리그' 본선 대진 추첨식과 함께 열린 2012년 올해의 선수상 시상식에서 팀 메이트인 리오넬 메시(24)와 레알 마드리드의 크리스티아누 호날두(27)를 제치고 53명의 투표인단 중 19표를 얻으며 최고의 선수의 자리에 올랐다.
올해 28살인 이니에스타는 스페인식 환상적인 볼 컨트롤을 특기로 지난 시즌 UEFA 대회의 2회 연속 우승은 물론 대회 MVP를 받으며 공로를 인정받았다.
이날 시상식에서 최고 선수상 후보로 최종 3인은 투표가 끝날 때까지 박빙을 기록하며 주인공을 알 수없었다. 지난해 수상자인 리오넬 메시가 73득점을 기록하며 2회 연속 트로피를 거머쥘 것이라는 예상을 뒤엎고 선정된 것은 이니에스타였다.
그는 수상 소감에서 “굉장한 영광이다. 이 상을 받아 행복하고 만족한다. 다른 두 선수(메시와 호날두) 모두 상을 받을 자격이 충분하다고 생각한다. 영광을 바르사 동료들과 스페인 대표팀과 함께 나눌 것”이라고 말했다.
MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) — Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta won the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for the 2011-2012 season on Thursday.
Iniesta earned 19 votes in the poll of journalists from across Europe, two more than Barcelona teammate and last year's winner, Lionel Messi, and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 28-year-old Iniesta was instrumental in helping Spain successfully defend its European Championship title this summer and was crowned the tournament's best player.
A three-man shortlist was selected by a panel of 53 journalists drawn from each of UEFA's member nations. The same journalists then voted for the winner immediately after the draw for this season's Champions League group stage.
UEFA created the honor after France Football magazine combined its traditional European award with FIFA's world player prize.
