[KNS뉴스통신=조해진 기자] 12일 오후 7시쯤 한국의 서울 도심에서 민주통합당 박지원 원내대표를 비롯해 민주통합당 의원 50명 등 야당 지도부와 의원단이 참여한 가운데 3,000여 명의 시민(주최 측 추산)이 모여 미국 쇠고기 수입을 반대하는 촛불집회가 열렸다.
집회 참가자들은 미국산 쇠고기 수입 중단과 수입 위생조건 재협상 추진 등을 요구했다.
미국 농무부(USDA)는 지난달 24일 10살 된 소에서 광우병이 발병됐다고 발표한 바 있다. 이에 한국은 현지 조사단을 파견해 조사한 뒤 미국 쇠고기가 안전하다고 발표했으나 광우병이 발생한 농장을 방문하지 못해 조사가 부실했다는 지적을 받고 있다.
현재 한국 정부는 미국산 쇠고기에 대해 수입 금지 조치를 내리지 않는다는 결정을 내렸으나 미국산 소고기 검역 강화 조치는 당분간 유지할 방침이다.
