뉴질랜드 내에서 활발한 논쟁을 불러일으킨 첫 케이스인 축산 농가 판매는 농산물 수출을 의존하고 있는 중국과 긴밀한 무역 및 관광 활성화에 도움이 될 것으로 기대하고 있기 때문이다.
농지는 뉴질랜드인의 소유로 남겨두어야 한다는 것과 축산농가 판매가 중국과의 무역관계를 증진시킬 것이라는 두 가지 의견이 논쟁을 불러오고 있다.
이번 축산농가 판매는 지난 1월에 정부가 승인을 했으나 이농가를 매수하려는 지역 농부들과 기업가들이 컨소시엄을 만들어 소송을 제기하면서 지연됐었다.
지난 2월 뉴질랜드 법원이 정부로 하여금 농가판매에 대해 강한 기준을 적용할 것을 요구했는데 법에 의하면 해외 투자자에게 농지를 판매할 때는 국가에 경제적인 이득이 된다는 것을 증명하도록 되어 있다.
20일 모리스 윌리엄슨 국토정보장관은 이 농가 판매는 모든 법적 조항에 적합한 것으로 확신한다고 밝히면서 서방 국가에 대한 농지 판매에는 반대가 많지 않았다는 점을 지적할 필요가 있다고 말하고 정부 승인을 확인했다.

New Zealand again approves farm sales to Chinese
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand's government has for the second time approved the sale of 16 dairy farms to Chinese investors.
The sale, the first to Chinese investors, has sparked vigorous debate in a country that is reliant on agriculture for much of its export earnings but which is also forging closer trade and tourism ties with China.
Some say farmland needs to stay in the hands of New Zealanders if the country is to remain prosperous; others say the deal will help boost trade with China.
The sale was initially approved by the government in January but was contested in court by a consortium of local farmers and businessmen who hoped to buy the land themselves.
A New Zealand judge in February ordered the government to review the sale using stricter criteria. New Zealand law allows the sale of farmland to foreign investors only if it can be shown to economically benefit the country.
Maurice Williamson, the land information minister, said Friday that after the review he remains convinced the sale meets all its legal obligations. Williamson said it was noteworthy that land sales to investors from several Western countries had proceeded without much opposition.
