이슬라마바드, 5월 2일 (신화) - 오사마 빈 라덴이 파키스탄 수도 이슬라마바드인근 산악지대의 한 소읍에서 2월 아침 일찍 미군과 파키스탄군의 합동작전으로 피살되었다고 알려졌다.
현지 신문보도에 의하면 빈 라덴은 2일 아침 일찍 시작된 합동군사 작전으로 그의 아들, 여인 1명, 추종자 3명과 함께 사살되었으며 빈 라덴의 6명의 어린애, 두 명의 처와 친구 4명이 함께 체포되었다고 밝혀졌다.
알카에다 지도자이며 9/11 테러공격의 주범으로 알려진 빈 라덴이 파키스탄에서 피살되었다는 소식은 그가 오랫동안 파키스탄에 숨어있다는 소문이 사실이었다는 것으로 판명되었다.
현지의 미디어는 파키스탄 정보부[ISI]의 소식통을 인용하여 군사작전은 파키스탄의 정보조직의 첩보에 의해 미군 특수부대의 주도로 이루어 졌으며 미국과 파키스탄 양국은 빈 라덴의 정확한 소재를 1주일 전에 파악한 것으로 보도했다.
빈 라덴이 숨어있는 은신처에 대해 코브라 헬리콥터 4대가 군사작전을 시작하기 전에 주변의 주민들에게 소등해 줄 것을 요청한 것으로 알려졌다. 고도의 비밀이 유지된 군사작전은 이슬라마바드 북쪽 60km 에 위치한 산악 마을인 아보타바드에서 현지 시간 01:00시에 시작되었으며 작전에 정통한 소식통은 작전이 2시간 안에 종료된 것으로 밝혔다.
작전에 참가한 미군의 코브라 헬리콥터 한 대가 빈 라덴의 무장 추종자가 쏜 총에 맞아 추락하기 전에 특수부대원들은 가까스로 목숨을 건졌으나 헬리콥터의 추락으로 발생한 화재로 두 가옥이 불탄 것으로 알려졌다.
파키스탄 정보부 소식통은 지상 작전은 미군의 주도로 이루어 졌다고 말한 것으로 인용되었다.
빈 라덴의 피살소실이 전해진 이후 파키스탄 정부와 육군은 침묵을 지키고 있고 현재까지 공식논평을 내놓지 않고 있다. 파키스탄 아시프 알리 자르다리 대통령은 대통령 집무실에서 긴급회의를 소집하고 곧 빈 라덴의 피살에 관한 성명서를 발표할 것으로 알려졌다.

World's most-wanted terrorist Bin Laden killed in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The world's most wanted terrorist Osama Bin Laden was killed in a joint operation launched by the U. S. and Pakistani armed forces early Monday morning in a small mountainous town near Pakistan's capital city Islamabad.
According to the local media reports, Bin Laden was killed along with his son, one woman and three followers in the joint military operation kicked off in the wee hours of Monday. Twelve people including six children, two wives of Bin Laden and his four close friends were also reportedly arrested in the operation.
The news about the death of Bin Laden in Pakistan has proven true about the long-time speculation that Bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda and the allegedly mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attack in the United States in 2001, is hiding in Pakistan.
Local media quoted Pakistani Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) sources as saying that the military operation which was mainly done by the U.S. special task forces on the ground was carried out on the tip-offs of Pakistani intelligence organizations.
The U.S. and Pakistani side got to know the exact whereabouts of Bin Laden and his followers about a week ago, the local media quoted ISI sources as saying.
Before the military operation was kicked off by four U.S. Cobra helicopters over the area where Bin Laden was hiding, the local residents living close to the hideout of Bin Laden were advised to turn off the lights of their houses.
The highly secret operation started at about 01:00 a.m. local time in the Sikandarabad area of Abbotabad, a small mountainous town located some 60 km north of Islamabad.
The operation lasted about two hours, said sources close to the operation. During the operation, one of the four U.S. Cobra helicopters were shot down by the armed followers of Bin Laden, but the military people aboard managed to survive before the chopper crashed into a lawn of a farmer's house. Two houses were reportedly engulfed by the huge fire caused by the crashed chopper.
The ISI sources were quoted as saying that the ground work was mainly done by the U.S. forces.
Following the report about the death of Bin Laden, the Pakistani side including its government and army has kept silent about the report and no official comments have been made on the story so far.
Sources close to the President house of Pakistan told Xinhua that President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned an emergent meeting at his Presidency and the Foreign Ministry will soon be authorized to give a statement on the Bin Laden death issue.
Local media reports said that the Pakistani government has beefed up the security around all the U.S. diplomatic organizations including its embassy in Islamabad and three consulates across the country.
The security measure taken by the Pakistani side for the U.S. diplomatic agencies in the country is due to the concerns for possible attacks by terrorist groups in retaliation against the killing of Bin Laden.
Shortly after Bin Laden was announced killed, a spokesman of Pakistan Taliban (TTP) denied the death of Bin Laden and claimed that Bin Laden is still alive with them.
Local watchers believed that the denial of the death of Bin Laden by Pakistan Taliban is most likely a propaganda. They pointed out that the death of Bin Laden, while certainly being good news to the whole world, may lead to fierce retaliation by al- Qaeda and Taliban militants in the future.
