이슬라마바드 (AP) - 1일 미국과 파키스탄 관리들에 의하면 오사마 빈 라덴은 파키스탄 수도 이슬라마바드 북부에 위치한 한 맨션에서 헬리콥터 공격으로 사살 되었다고 한다.
한 파키스탄 정보부원에 의하면 이슬라마바드에서 100km 떨어진 비랄지역에 4대의 헬리콥터가 공격에 참가했다고 한다. 지상에서 발사된 총에 헬리콥터 한 대가 추락한 것으로 밝히고 사상자에 대해서는 언급하지 않았다.
워싱턴에서 버락 오바마 대통령은 텔레비전으로 생중계된 성명서를 통해 작전은 1일 수행되었다고 발표했다.
빈 라덴이 이슬라마바드 근교에서 사살되었다는 소식으로 그가 어떻게 장기간 추적을 따돌려 왔는가에 대한 의문을 갖게 했다. 대부분의 미국 정보 당국은 빈 라덴이 파키스탄과 아프가니스탄 국경지대의 무법지대에 은신하고 있는 것으로 판단하고 있었다.

Officials: Bin Laden killed near Islamabad
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Osama bin Laden was killed in a helicopter raid on a mansion in an area north of the Pakistani capital, U.S. and Pakistani officials said Monday.
Four helicopters launched the attack in the Bilal area of Abbottabad, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Islamabad, said a Pakistani intelligence official. One of the helicopters crashed after it apparently was hit by fire from the ground, the official said. He gave no word on casualties.
He said the helicopters took off from a Pakistani air base in the north of the country.
Women and children were taken into custody during the raid, he said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.
A U.S. official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the raid was on a mansion close to Islamabad.
Announcing the operation in a televised statement in Washington, President Barack Obama said the operation took place Sunday.
