[베이루트=AP/KNS뉴스통신] 시리아의 바샤르 아사드 정권은 아랍리그와 유혈사태 중지를 합의한 이후에도 반정부 시위를 폭력으로 진압하고 있는 와중에 26일 아랍리그의 모니터링딘이 시리아에 도착했다.
민권운동가에 의하면 지난주에도 수백 명의 민간인이 사망했으며 26일에는 60명의 첫 아랍 리그 모니터링팀이 도착하기 수 시간 전에도 중부도시에 대한 집중포격으로 23명이 사망했다고 전했다.
카이로의 아랍리그는 이번 모니터링단 파견은 시리아 정권이 유혈사태를 종식시킬 수 있는 “마지막 찬스“라고 말했다.
지난 19일 아랍리그와 아사드는 시리아 정부는 시가지에서 보안군과 중무기를 철수시키고 야당과의 대화를 시작하며 인권단체와 언론인의 입국을 허용하기로 합의했었다.
모니터들은 합의한 사항이 이행되고 있는가를 확인하도록 파견되었으나 현재까지 아사드는 무력에 의한 진압을 중지하지 않고 이미 합의한 어떤 사항도 이행할 뜻이 없어 보인다.
야당은 아사드 정권과 아랍리그와의 합의는 순전이 웃음거리에 불가하다 면서 평가를 하지 않고 있다. 반정부 시위자들 가운데 몇 사람은 아랍리그의 조치는 살육에 동조하는 것이라는 비난까지 퍼붓고 있다.
현 시리아 시위는 점차로 군 탈영병과 정부군간의 군사적 충돌로 확대되어 가는 양상을 보이고 있다.

Arab monitors head to Syria, opposition skeptical
BEIRUT (AP) — The Arab League sent monitors to Syria Monday even though President Bashar Assad's regime has only intensified its crackdown on dissent in the week since agreeing to the Arab plan to stop the bloodshed.
Activists say government forces have killed several hundred civilians in the past week. At least 23 more deaths were reported Monday from intense shelling in the center of the country, just hours before the first 60 monitors were to arrive.
In Cairo, an Arab League official said this monitoring mission was the Syrian regime's "last chance" to reverse course.
The Arab League plan agreed to by Assad last Monday requires the government to remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country.
The monitors are supposed to ensure compliance, but so far there is no sign that Assad is implementing any of the terms, much less letting up on his brutal crackdown.
Opposition members say the regime's agreement to the Arab plan is a farce. Some anti-government protesters have even criticized the League's stance to the point of accusing it of complicity in the killings.
The Syrian conflict is becoming increasingly militarized with growing clashes between army defectors and troops.
