브뤼셀, 4월 23일 (신화) - 나토는 한 대의 미군 무인기 프레데터(Predator)가 23일 미스라타에서 리비아 지도자 카다피군의 로켓탄 발사기를 공격했다고 성명서에서 발표했다.
성명서에서 “연합보호작전을 지원하기 위해 프레데터 무인 공중감시기 (UAS)의 무기시스템에서 공격을 감행했다. 카다피군의 로켓탄 발사기는 미스라타의 민간인을 공격하고 있었다“고 밝혔다.
23일 미군은 이번 무인기 공격은 미 국방부가 리비아 반정부군을 지원하기 위해 무아마르 카다피 국가원수의 친위군을 공격하도록 승인한 지 이틀 만에 처음으로 이뤄졌다고 확인했다.
시가지 목표물을 공격하는 강점을 지니고 있는 무장 무인항공기 프레데터는 현재 시가지에 탱크를 은닉시키고 인간방패를 사용하는 카다피군의 새로운 전술에 대응하기 위해 도입된 것으로 보인다.
나토는 발표한 성명서에서 지난 3월 31일 작전권 이양 이후 3천회의 출격가운데 약 절반이 공격에 가담함으로써 고도의 작전속도를 유지하고 있다고 발표했다.

U.S. Predator destroys rocket launcher in Libya
BRUSSELS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. unmanned Predator drone bombed a rocket launcher of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces in Misrata on Saturday, NATO said in a statement.
"The strike was carried out by a Predator Unmanned Aerial Surveillance (UAS) weapons system provided to support Operation Unified Protector. The rocket launcher has been used against civilians in Misrata," the statement said.
Earlier Saturday, the U.S. military confirmed the first strike by a Predator drone in Libya, two days after the U.S. authorized the use of armed Predator drones to attack Libya government forces.
The deployment of armed Predators, which are capable of bombing targets more easily in urban areas, is to counter Gaddafi forces' new tactics of hiding tanks in cities and using human shields.
According to the statement, NATO has kept up a high operational tempo since it assumed full command of the mission on March 31, launching over 3,000 sorties, almost half of them strike ones.
