산 페드로 쿠투드, 필리핀 (AP) - 성 금요일 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박히신 고통을 재현하기 위해 몇 명의 필리핀 사람이 나무 십자가에 못이 박히는 행사가 열렸다. 성 금요일은 천주교에서 정식으로 인정하지 않고 있는 가운데 많은 관광객을 끌어 드리고 있다.
북 팜팡가 주(Pampanga)의 산 후안 마을 관리는 22일 세 명의 노동자가 스테인리스 못을 손바닥에 해머로 박는 순간에도 차분하게 있었다고 말했다. 그 사람들은 관광객들이 사진을 찍는 수분동안 잔인하게 내려 째는 햇볕을 받으며 십자에 못 박혀 세워져 있었다. 인근의 마을의 4명을 합쳐 전체 페드로 쿠투드 지역에서 10여명이 못에 박혔다 고 한다.
이러한 장관의 연출은 필리핀의 전통신앙과 천주교 교리가 합쳐 진 것으로 보인다. 필리핀의 성금요일 예수 수난 행사를 천주교에서는 정식으로 인정하지 않고 있지만 수천 명의 관광객을 끌어 드리고 있다.

Filipinos nailed to crosses in bizarre rites
SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines (AP) — Several Filipinos have been nailed to wooden crosses to reenact Jesus Christ's suffering in a bizarre Good Friday rite that has been rejected by the Catholic church but that draws thousands of tourists.
Officials San Juan village in northern Pampanga province say three laborers appeared calm as stainless steel nails were driven through their palms with hammers Friday. They were then set aloft on crosses under a brutal sun for a few minutes as tourists snapped pictures.
Village leader Remigio dela Cruz says four other men were crucified in nearby Santa Lucia village and more than a dozen more are being nailed to crosses in his San Pedro Cutud community.
The spectacle reflects the country's unique brand of Catholicism, which includes folk superstitions. Filipinos Jesus Christ's suffering in a bizarre Good Friday rite that has been rejected by the Catholic church but that draws thousands of tourists.
