런던, 4월 16일 (신화) - 옥스퍼드대학 앤드루 해밀턴 부총장이 이번 주 베이징과 홍콩 방문을 계기로 새로운 교환학생제도를 발표하여 중국과의 관계를 더욱 발전시켜 나가려고 하고 있다. 해밀턴 부총장은 신화통신과의 인터뷰에서 중국방문의 주목적은 4월 24일 베이징 청화 국립 종합대학 개교 백주년 기념식에 참석하고, 베이징에서 열리는 글로벌 대학총장 정상회담과 홍콩의 옥스퍼드대학신문 창립 50주년 기념식에 참석하는 것이라고 말했다.
해밀턴 부총장의 중국방문기간을 계기로 홍콩의 빅토르 엔 윌리암펑재단이 제공하는 새로운 “리엔펑 장학금”을 기반으로 하는 교환학생 제도가 발표되며 이 제도에 의해 중국학생들이 옥스퍼드대학 하기 현장연구실습에 참여할 수 있게 된다. 부총장은 “2011년 하기학기에 시작하는 이제도의 혜택으로 영국과 중국학생들에게 서로 상대방 대학에서 연구할 수 있는 기회를 주게 될 것 이다,” 고 말했다.
부총장은 옥스퍼드와 중국는 17세기로 거슬러 올라가는 오랜 관계를 유지하고 있으며 현재 공동연구와 장학금 제공 등 많은 분야에 걸쳐 깊은 관계로 확대되고 있다고 강조했다. 현재 옥스퍼드대학은 중국학생들에게 여러 장학금을 제공하고 있고 750명의 중국 학생이 공부하고 있다. 해밀턴 부총장은 “옥스퍼드의 중국센터는 활발한 활동을 하고 있으며 중국 학술연구의 중추적 역할을 하고 있다,” 고 소개했다.
옥스퍼드대학교는 1096년부터 교육을 시작한 영어권에서 가장 오래된 900년의 역사를 자랑하는 대학으로, 미국 하버드 대학교와 함께 세계 최고의 명문대학 중 하나로 손꼽히고 있다. 2009년 새로이 맞이한 유능한 전 예일대학출신의 앤드루 해밀턴 부총장은 총장을 보좌하여 옥스퍼드 대학의 실질적인 지도자 위치에 있다. 1991년 노벨 평화상을 수상한 미얀마의 아웅 산 수치를 비롯한 여러 노벨상 수상자와 에드워드 히스, 마거릿 대처, 토니 블레어 같은 영국 총리, 빌 클린턴 미국 대통령, 노르웨이의 하랄 5세, 보브 호크 오스트레일리아 총리, 인디라 간디 인도 총리, 베나지르 부토 파키스탄 총리 등 다양한 부문의 저명인사들을 배출한 세계적 대학으로 손꼽히고 있다.

Oxford University to provide new opportunities for Chinese students: Vice-Chancellor
LONDON, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The relationship between Oxford University and China would develop further as Oxford's Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Hamilton will announce a new scheme for exchanging students during his visit to Beijing and Hong Kong in the following days.
Professor Hamilton told Xinhua that the principle reason for his trip to China is to attend the centenary celebration of Tsinghua University in Beijing on April 24, as well as to attend the Global Summit of University Presidents in Beijing and the 50th Anniversary of the Oxford University Press in Hong Kong.
The good news for Chinese students is that during his visit, a new exchange scheme named "The Li &Fung Scholarships" would be announced. Sponsored by the Victor &William Fung Foundation in Hong Kong, the scheme would allow students from China to undertake summer research placements at the University of Oxford.
It would start from the summer of 2011, and the scheme will also provide opportunities for students from Oxford to study in China.
"It's going to be an important new opportunity for Chinese students to come to Oxford," said Professor Hamilton.
He emphasized that Oxford had "a very deep long-standing relationship" with China, which could be stretched back to the 17th century. And that connection now extends through many different aspects of activities, including research collaborations and student scholarships.
There are already several scholarships to help Chinese students to study at Oxford, and there are nearly 750 Chinese students in Oxford at the present time. Professor Hamilton also introduced that "We have a thriving China center, which acts as a central point for all scholarly work on China," obviously hoping to further develop the relationship.
With a history of nearly 900 years, Oxford University is the oldest university in the English-speaking world. As most British universities, Vice-Chancellor is the de facto leader of the university rather than the Chancellor. Professor Hamilton holds this position since 2009.
