Toyota to halt Europe production for several days
TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. will suspend production in Europe for several days in April and May due to parts shortages following last month's massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the world's No. 1 automaker said Wednesday.
The move will affect five European plants — three auto assembly factories in Britain, France and Turkey, and two engine plants in Britain and Poland, Toyota said in a statement.
Production at the five plants will be halted for several days in late April and early May. Toyota had already announced a series of one-day shutdowns at its North American plants from April 15-25.
The magnitude-9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami on March 11 destroyed auto parts factories in northeastern Japan, causing severe shortages for Toyota and other automakers. Toyota suffered a production loss of 260,000 cars in Japan from March 14 to April 8.
Toyota will resume car production at all its plants in Japan at half capacity from April 18-27, but the company has said it does not know when it can return to full production in the country due to the supply crunch.
Moody's Investors Service warned last week that it may downgrade its credit rating for Toyota amid concern over a prolonged production suspension.

도요타 유럽공장 일시 조업중단
도쿄 (AP) - 세계 1위의 일본 자동차 제조업체 도요타는 일본 대지진과 쓰나미에 따른 부품 부족 때문에 유럽 내 생산을 4-5월 중 며칠 동안 중단한다고 13일 밝혔다.
조업이 중단되는 공장은 영국, 프랑스, 터키의 자동차 조립 공장 3곳과 영국과 폴란드의 엔진 공장 2곳으로 총 5개 유럽 내 공장이 영향을 받게 된다.
유럽지역 5개 공장의 생산을 4-5월 중 며칠 동안 일시 중단하기로 했다. 도요타는 앞서 북미 공장에서도 오는 15-25일 중 하루 씩 단계적으로 공장을 폐쇄하여 조업 중단을 실시한다고 밝힌 바 있다.
지난달 3월 11일 일본 북동부를 강타한 9.0진도의 대지진과 쓰나미로 자동차 부품 공장이 피해를 입으면서 도요타와 주요 자동차 업체들은 심각한 부품 부족에 시달리고 있다. 도요타는 이 때문에 지난달 14일부터 8일까지 일본 내에서 26만대의 생산 손실을 입었다.
도요타는 18-27일 일본 내 모든 공장의 조업을 최대 생산능력의 절반 수준으로 재개할 예정이지만, 완전한 조업 재개는 언제 가능할지 알 수 없다고 회사 측은 덧붙였다.
무디스 인베스터스 서비스는 지난주 장기간의 생산중단 우려로 도요타의 신용등급을 하향조정할 수 있다고 경고했다.
